Although the actual practice of animal sacrifice was largely abolished in the later history of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, it is still recalled through biblical stories, the ritual calendar and community events. The essays in this volume discuss the various positions regarding the value of sacrifice in a wide variety of disciplines such as history, archaeology, literature, philosophy, art and gender and post-colonial studies. In this context they examine a wide array of questions pertaining to the 'actuality of sacrifice' in various social, historical and intellectual contexts ranging from the pre-historical to the post-Holocaust, and present new understandings of some of the most sensitive topics of our time. 410 0$aJewish and Christian perspectives series ;$vVolume 28. 606 $aSacrifice 615 0$aSacrifice. 676 $a203/.4 702 $aHoutman$b Alberdina 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910807440403321 996 $aThe actuality of sacrifice$94001343 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04565nam 2200805Ia 450 001 9910952294703321 005 20250830010647.0 010 $a9786613895431 010 $a9781283582988 010 $a1283582988 010 $a9780252092862 010 $a0252092864 035 $a(CKB)2670000000240950 035 $a(EBL)3414014 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000711721 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11416652 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000711721 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10694208 035 $a(PQKB)10157276 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3414014 035 $a(OCoLC)1058779263$z(OCoLC)810161386$z(OCoLC)923494884$z(OCoLC)961676614$z(OCoLC)962596556$z(OCoLC)965980645$z(OCoLC)988481385$z(OCoLC)991916460$z(OCoLC)1037935256$z(OCoLC)1038701909$z(OCoLC)1045538590$z(OCoLC)1055388531$z(OCoLC)1064022244$z(OCoLC)1081219489$z(OCoLC)1148134893 035 $a(OCoLC)on1058779263 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse23752 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3414014 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10593686 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL389543 035 $a(OCoLC)923494884 035 $a(Perlego)2382537 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000240950 100 $a20080919d2009 ub 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aPre-gay L.A $ea social history of the movement for homosexual rights /$fC. Part ethnography and part social history, it is a detailed account of the history of the movement as manifested through the emergence of four related organizations: Mattachine, ONE Incorporated, the Homosexual Information Center (HIC), and the Institute for the Study of Human Resources (ISHR), which began doing business as ONE Incorporated when the two organizations merged in 1995. Pre-Gay L.A. is a chronicle of how one clandestine special interest association emerged as a powerful political force that spawned several other organizations over a period of more than sixty years. Relying on extended interviews with participants as well as a full review of the archives of the Homosexual Information Center, C. Todd White unearths the institutional histories of the gay and lesbian rights movement and the myriad personalities involved, including Mattachine founder Harry Hay; ONE Magazine editors Dale Jennings, Donald Slater, and Irma Wolf; ONE Incorporated founder Dorr Legg; and many others. Fighting to decriminalize homosexuality and to obtain equal rights, the viable organizations that these individuals helped to establish significantly impacted legal policies not only in Los Angeles but across the United States, affecting the lives of most of us living in America today. 517 3 $aPre-gay Los Angeles 606 $aGay rights$zCalifornia$zLos Angeles$xHistory 606 $aGay liberation movement$zCalifornia$zLos Angeles$xHistory 606 $aGay people$zCalifornia$zLos Angeles$xHistory 606 $aLGBTQ+ political groups$2homoit$3https://homosaurus.org/v4/homoit0003521 606 $aDecriminalization$2homoit$3https://homosaurus.org/v4/homoit0000276 606 $aLGBTQ+ civil rights$2homoit$3https://homosaurus.org/v4/homoit0000276 607 $aLos Angeles (Calif.)$xHistory 615 0$aGay rights$xHistory. 615 0$aGay liberation movement$xHistory. 615 0$aGay people$xHistory. 615 7$aLGBTQ+ political groups 615 7$aDecriminalization 615 7$aLGBTQ+ civil rights 676 $a323.3/2640979494 700 $aWhite$b C.
