CE) is an important work in the history of Homeric criticism. In contrast to the philosopher's allegorical readings of Homer in De Antro and De Styge, in the Homeric Questions Porphyry solves problemata by applying the dictum that "the poet explains himself". Based on a new collation of the manuscripts, this edition of Porphyry's Homeric Questions on the Iliad is the first since 1880. The preface contains sections on Porphyry's life and works, the manuscript tradition of the text, scholarship on the Homeric Questions, and the principles of this edition. The editor has eliminated much that had been wrongly attributed to Porphyry on stylistic grounds and has constructed text according to a strict distinction between extracts of the Homeric Questions, epitomes of the extracts, and Porphyrian scholia - all confusingly interspersed in the old text. A facing English translation at last makes this text accessible to the Greek-less reader. The commentary explains Porphyry's arguments and the editor's textual decisions. The editor sheds new light on Porphyry's use of the dictum that "the poet explains himself", by differentiating it from that of Alexandria textual critics. 410 0$aTexte und Kommentare 606 $aGreek poetry$xHistory and criticism 610 $aGreece /Philosophy. 610 $aHomer. 610 $aNeo-Platonism. 610 $aPorphyrios. 615 0$aGreek poetry$xHistory and criticism. 676 $a883/.01 700 $aPorphyry$fca. 234-ca. 305.$0183422 701 $aMacPhail$b John A.$f1970-$0731737 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910780732603321 996 $aPorphyry's Homeric questions on the Iliad$93703599 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02923nam 2200505Ia 450 001 9910807315603321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a0-585-25851-1 035 $a(CKB)111004365861030 035 $a(EBL)3039628 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000210279 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11181135 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000210279 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10282893 035 $a(PQKB)11048551 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3039628 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3039628 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10605357 035 $a(OCoLC)923703740 035 $a(EXLCZ)99111004365861030 100 $a19980612d1997 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $auran#|||au|aa 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 02$aA new Europe in the changing global system /$fedited by Richard Falk and Tamas Szentes 210 $aTokyo ;$aNew York $cUnited Nations University Press$dc1997 215 $a1 online resource (262 p.) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a92-808-0934-2 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references. 327 $tIntroduction /$rRichard Falk --$gPART ONE:$tINTRODUCTORY --$g1:$tOpening Address:$tWho Are We Europeans? /$r/ ?Arpa?d Go?ncz --$g2:$tKeynote Address:$tEurope and the World System in a Historical Perspective/$rDomokos Kosary --$gPART TWO:$tTHE WIDER CONTEXT --$g3:$tEurope in a World of Regions /$rBjo?rn Hettne --$g4:$tA World in Chaos /$rSamir Amin --$g5:$tStructural Issues of Global Governance:$tImplications for Europe /$rRobert Cox --$g6:$tFailure in Europe:$tRegional Security after the Cold War /$rRichard Falk --$gPART THREE:$tTHE LEGACY OF COMMUNIST RULE --$g7:$tNationalism and Ethnicity in Europe /$rGeorge Schopflin --$g8:$tThe European Communities and Eastern and Central Europe /$rTibor Pala?nkai --$g9:$tTransfer of Technology:$tSome Lessons from the International Economy /$rCharles Cooper --$g10:$tScience and Technology in Central and Eastern Europe /$rVladislav Kotchetkov --$g11:$tDemocratization of Eastern and Central Europe and the Relations between North and South /$rLal Jayawardena --$gPART FOUR:$tTRANSITION TO A NEW EUROPE --$g12:$tEurope:$tHope with Many Uncertainties /$rCarlos Blanco --$g13:$tThe Agenda of European Politics in the 1990s /$rMiha?ly Simai --$g14:$tThe New Dimensions of European Economies:$tIntegration and Disintegration in the Post-1992, Post-communist Era /$rAlbert Bressand --$g15:$tThe Future of EC Institutions:$tReform Process in the 1980s /$rGianni Bonvicini. 606 $aGlobalization$zEurope 607 $aEuropean Union countries 615 0$aGlobalization 701 $aFalk$b Richard A$0128681 701 $aSzentes$b Tamas$0382517 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910807315603321 996 $aA new Europe in the changing global system$94036847 997 $aUNINA
