Concluding Remarks; References 330 3 $aIt is generally acknowledged that the government?s output is difficult to define and its value is hard to measure. The practical solution, adopted by national accounts systems, is to equate output to input costs. However, several studies estimate significant inefficiencies in government activities (i.e., same output could be achieved with less inputs), implying that inputs are not a good approximation for outputs. If taken seriously, the next logical step is to purge from GDP the fraction of government inputs that is wasted. As differences in the quality of the public sector have a direct impact on citizens? effective consumption of public and private goods and services, we must take them into account when computing a measure of living standards. We illustrate such a correction computing corrected per capita GDPs on the basis of two studies that estimate efficiency scores for several dimensions of government activities. We show that the correction could be significant, and rankings of living standards could be re-ordered as a result. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2012/182 606 $aCost and standard of living 606 $aEconomic development 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aPublic Finance$2imf 606 $aMeasurement and Data on National Income and Product Accounts and Wealth$2imf 606 $aEnvironmental Accounts$2imf 606 $aPublicly Provided Goods: General$2imf 606 $aPublic Administration$2imf 606 $aPublic Sector Accounting and Audits$2imf 606 $aSocial Security and Public Pensions$2imf 606 $aHealth: General$2imf 606 $aPublic Enterprises$2imf 606 $aPublic-Private Enterprises$2imf 606 $aEducation: General$2imf 606 $aGeneral Aggregative Models: General$2imf 606 $aNational Government Expenditures and Health$2imf 606 $aHealth economics$2imf 606 $aCivil service & public sector$2imf 606 $aEducation$2imf 606 $aPublic finance & taxation$2imf 606 $aHealth$2imf 606 $aPublic sector$2imf 606 $aNational accounts$2imf 606 $aHealth care spending$2imf 606 $aEconomic sectors$2imf 606 $aExpenditure$2imf 606 $aFinance, Public$2imf 606 $aNational income$2imf 606 $aExpenditures, Public$2imf 607 $aCyprus$2imf 615 0$aCost and standard of living. 615 0$aEconomic development. 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aPublic Finance 615 7$aMeasurement and Data on National Income and Product Accounts and Wealth 615 7$aEnvironmental Accounts 615 7$aPublicly Provided Goods: General 615 7$aPublic Administration 615 7$aPublic Sector Accounting and Audits 615 7$aSocial Security and Public Pensions 615 7$aHealth: General 615 7$aPublic Enterprises 615 7$aPublic-Private Enterprises 615 7$aEducation: General 615 7$aGeneral Aggregative Models: General 615 7$aNational Government Expenditures and Health 615 7$aHealth economics 615 7$aCivil service & public sector 615 7$aEducation 615 7$aPublic finance & taxation 615 7$aHealth 615 7$aPublic sector 615 7$aNational accounts 615 7$aHealth care spending 615 7$aEconomic sectors 615 7$aExpenditure 615 7$aFinance, Public 615 7$aNational income 615 7$aExpenditures, Public 676 $a332.1/52 700 $aGrigoli$b Francesco$01127643 701 $aLey$b Eduardo$0485587 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910807281903321 996 $aQuality of Government and Living Standards$94092734 997 $aUNINA
