Individuals in the town of Makeni narrate survival through the rubric of love, and by telling their stories and bringing memory into the present, create for themselves a powerful basis on which to reaffirm the rightness of their choices and orient themselves to a livable everyday. The book illuminates a social world based on love, a deep, compassionate relationship based on material exchange and nurturing, that transcends romance and binds people together across space and through time. In situating their wartime lives firmly in this social world, they call into question the government's own narrative that Makeni residents openly collaborated with the rebel RUF during its three-year occupation of the town. Residents argue instead that it was the government's disloyalty to its people, rather than rebel invasion and occupation, which destroyed the town and forced uneasy co-existence between civilians and militants. 410 0$aCalifornia series in public anthropology ;$v24. 606 $aWar and society$zSierra Leone 607 $aSierra Leone$xHistory$yCivil War, 1991-2002$vPersonal narratives 607 $aSierra Leone$xHistory$yCivil War, 1991-2002$xPsychological aspects 607 $aSierra Leone$xHistory$yCivil War, 1991-2002$xSocial aspects 610 $aafrica. 610 $aanthropologists. 610 $aanthropology. 610 $acivilians. 610 $acultural memory. 610 $aethnographies. 610 $aevangelists. 610 $afathers. 610 $agovernment. 610 $ahuman impact. 610 $alife and death. 610 $amakeni. 610 $amilitants. 610 $amilitary history. 610 $amodern history. 610 $anonfiction accounts. 610 $aovercoming trauma. 610 $apersonal stories. 610 $apolitical. 610 $apoliticians. 610 $apower of love. 610 $arebel forces. 610 $arebels. 610 $asierra leone. 610 $asierra leoneans. 610 $asocial justice. 610 $asocial world. 610 $asoldiers. 610 $astudents. 610 $asurvival. 610 $atraders. 610 $atraumatic experiences. 610 $atrue stories. 610 $aviolence. 610 $awartime experiences. 615 0$aWar and society 676 $a966.4044 700 $aBolten$b Catherine E$g(Catherine Elizabeth),$f1976-$01719641 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910806824403321 996 $aI did it to save my life$94117624 997 $aUNINA
