Over the past four decades, the number of inmates held in US prisons and jails has quadrupled. This massive growth is associated with a number of different issues and challenges within prisons and jails, including overcrowding; gang activity and misconduct; a shift away from rehabilitation and programming; expanded use of solitary confinement; inmates' human rights; criticisms of health care; and massive, publicly funded budgets. Many more states now spend more on corrections than higher education. "Issues in corrections: research, policy, and future prospects" explores these issues in depth. It takes current topics in institutional corrections and explores the main issues surrounding each. Themes include institutional corrections, prison behavior (including gangs and misconduct), solitary confinement, prison programming, and rehabilitation."--Back cover. 606 $aPrisoners$zUnited States 607 $aUnited States$2fast 615 0$aPrisoners 676 $a365.60973 702 $aHilinski-Rosick$b Carly 702 $aWalsh$b John P. 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910798939703321 996 $aIssues in corrections$93753265 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04830nam 2200769 450 001 9910813066903321 005 20230912133625.0 010 $a1-4426-5428-7 010 $a1-282-02257-1 010 $a9786612022579 010 $a1-4426-7413-X 024 7 $a10.3138/9781442674134 035 $a(CKB)2420000000004012 035 $a(EBL)3254752 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000294396 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11193642 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000294396 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10311821 035 $a(PQKB)10142576 035 $a(CaBNvSL)thg00600307 035 $a(DE-B1597)464416 035 $a(OCoLC)1024013023 035 $a(OCoLC)944178266 035 $a(DE-B1597)9781442674134 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL4671447 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11257157 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL202257 035 $a(OCoLC)958515511 035 $a(OCoLC)431552681 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)musev2_104690 035 $a(VaAlCD)20.500.12592/8dm4mm 035 $a(schport)gibson_crkn/2009-12-01/6/418542 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4671447 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3254752 035 $a(EXLCZ)992420000000004012 100 $a20160922h20042004 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$aDurable peace $echallenges for peacebuilding in Africa /$fedited by Taisier M. Jones -- Conclusion : the long and difficult road to peace / Taisier M. Ali and Robert O. Matthews. 330 $aThe African continent has been racked with war in the years since decolonization. In the aftermath of violent conflict, peace is often fragile. With Durable Peace, Taisier M. Ali and Robert O. Matthews have brought together leading scholars to discuss the experiences of ten African countries - Angola, Ethiopia, Liberia, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Uganda, and Zimbabwe - in recovering from violent civil war. In this series of remarkable and thought-provoking essays, the contributors shed light on the process of peacebuilding. Collectively, they demonstrate that if efforts to restore peace in war-torn societies are to be successful, such efforts must be wide in scope, involving security and political issues, as well as economic development and socio-psychological reconciliation. Additionally, they must be extended over long periods of time and, above all else, anchored in the local community. Peacebuilding is a difficult process, subject to frequent setbacks, and sometimes outright failure. Durable Peace concludes that any peacebuilding effort must include at least four building blocks: a secure environment, new political institutions that are broadly representative, a healthy economy, and a mechanism for dealing with injustices of the past and future. How these blocks are put together will vary, but if they are arranged to fit the specific local circumstances, the outcome will likely be self-sustaining peace. 606 $aPeace-building$zAfrica 606 $aPeace-building$zAfrica$xHistory$y20th century 607 $aAfrica$xPolitics and government$y1960- 615 0$aPeace-building 615 0$aPeace-building$xHistory 676 $a327.1/72/096 702 $aAli$b Taisier Mohamed Ahmed 702 $aMatthews$b Robert O. 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910813066903321 996 $aDurable peace$94030388 997 $aUNINA
