Kieninger challenges the traditional Cold War narrative that de?tente prolonged the division of Europe and precipitated America's decline in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Rather, he argues that policymakers in the U.S. Department of State and in Western Europe envisaged the stability enabled by de?tente as a precondition for change, as Communist regimes saw a sense of security as a prerequisite for opening up their societies to Western influence over time. Kieninger identifies the Helsinki Accords, Lyndon Johnson's bridge building, and Willy Brandt's Ostpolitik as efforts aimed at constructive changes in Eastern Europe through a multiplication of contacts, communication, and cooperation on all societal levels. This study also illuminates the longevity of America's policy of peaceful change against the background of the nuclear stalemate and the military status quo"--Provided by publisher. 410 0$aHarvard Cold War studies book series. 606 $aDetente$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aCommunication in politics$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aCold War$xDiplomatic history 606 $aNational security$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aNational security$zEurope$xHistory$y20th century 607 $aUnited States$xForeign relations$zEurope 607 $aEurope$xForeign relations$zUnited States 607 $aUnited States$xForeign relations$y1963-1969 607 $aUnited States$xForeign relations$y1969-1974 615 0$aDetente$xHistory 615 0$aCommunication in politics$xHistory 615 0$aCold War$xDiplomatic history. 615 0$aNational security$xHistory 615 0$aNational security$xHistory 676 $a327.730409/046 700 $aKieninger$b Stephan$0790058 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910798275703321 996 $aDynamic de?tente$93787528 997 $aUNINA
