In this cultural and literary studies project, Singleton charts new territory in the relationship between critical race studies, psychoanalysis and performance studies to explore and address the psychic and social remains of the nation's history of slavery and discrimination in a post-racial moment. The book brings psychoanalytic paradigms of mourning and melancholia and discussions of race and performance into conversation with literary representations of America's post-Emancipation life and ritual practice to challenge scholarship that fails to engage with both ethnic studies and psychoanalysis to interpret history. The work further explores how theatrical and musical performance contribute to the construction and deconstruction of historical and subjective grief over U.S. racial legacies. Singleton develops a theory of cultural melancholy to provide a framework to engage a process that, through which modern ritual practices, constructs, maintains, and link normative and minority racial positions in relation to social loss and unresolved grief. The discussion of primary texts ranges from F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby to James Baldwin's Go Tell It on the Mountain to Billie Holiday's memoir, and in the process ranges different geographical, political, and historical senses. By analyzing African American and white subject-formations as represented in literature, drama, and musical performance in the twentieth century, the project helps us understand the process of coming to terms with historical traumas of slavery, segregation, and racial discrimination"--$cProvided by publisher. 330 $a"A daring cultural and literary studies investigation, Cultural Melancholy explores the legacy of unresolved grief produced by ongoing racial oppression and resistance in the United States. Using acute analysis of literature, drama, musical performance, and films, Singleton demonstrates how rituals of racialization and resistance transfer and transform melancholy discreetly across time, consolidating racial identities and communities along the way. He also argues that this form of impossible mourning binds racialized identities across time and social space by way of cultural resistance efforts. Singleton develops the concept of "cultural melancholy" as a response to scholarship that calls for the separation of critical race studies and psychoanalysis, excludes queer theoretical approaches from readings of African American literatures and cultures, and overlooks the status of racialized performance culture as a site of serious academic theorization. In doing so, he weaves critical race studies, psychoanalysis, queer theory, and performance studies into conversation to uncover a host of hidden dialogues--psychic and social, personal and political, individual and collective--for the purpose of promoting a culture of racial grieving, critical race consciousness, and collective agency. Wide-ranging and theoretically bold, Cultural Melancholy counteracts the racial legacy effects that plague our twenty-first century multiculture"--$cProvided by publisher. 606 $aAmerican literature$xAfrican American authors$xHistory and criticism 606 $aGrief in literature 606 $aMourning customs$zUnited States 606 $aAfrican Americans$xRace identity$xHistory 615 0$aAmerican literature$xAfrican American authors$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aGrief in literature. 615 0$aMourning customs 615 0$aAfrican Americans$xRace identity$xHistory. 676 $a810.9/896073 686 $aSOC001000$aHIS054000$2bisacsh 700 $aSingleton$b Jermaine$f1974-$01534425 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910797853903321 996 $aCultural melancholy$93781994 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04940nam 22005171 450 001 9910787633103321 005 20230803031924.0 010 $a1-4411-7687-X 010 $a1-4411-5311-X 035 $a(CKB)2670000000493915 035 $a(EBL)1572198 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001060834 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1572198 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000493915 100 $a20131212d2013 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aDeveloping materials for language teaching /$fedited by Brian Tomlinson 205 $aSecond edition. 210 1$aLondon :$cBloomsbury Publishing,$d2013. 210 4$aİ2013 215 $a1 online resource (577 p.) 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aCover; HalfTitle; Series; Title; Copyright; Contents; List of Contributors; Preface; Introduction: Are Materials Developing?; What is materials development?; What are materials?; What are the issues in materials development?; Who should develop the materials?; What are the current trends in materials development?; What is the future of materials development?; MATSDA; Part A Evaluation and Adaptation of Materials; 1 Materials Evaluation; What is materials evaluation?; Principles in materials evaluation; Second language acquisition research (SLA); Types of materials evaluation 327 $aStandard approaches to materials evaluationDeveloping criteria for materials evaluation; Conclusion; 2 Adapting Courses: A Personal View; Introduction; Adapting materials; A model for adapting courses; Conclusions; 3 Publishing a Coursebook: The Role of Feedback; Introduction; Nature of pathways and loops in materials development; Existence of feedback loops in materials development; The case of Singapore; Role and effectiveness of feedback in the case study; Incorporating feedback loops in the materials development process; Conclusion; Comments on Part A 327 $aPart B Principles and Procedures of Materials Development4 Developing Principled Frameworks for Materials Development; Introduction; Principles in materials development; A text-driven approach to materials development; Using the framework; An example of the framework in use; A web-based adaptation of the framework; Other types of principled framework; Conclusion; 5 The Instructional Design of a Coursebook Is As It Is Because of What It Has To Do - An Application of Systemic Functional; Introduction; Concepts from systemic functional theory; The context of culture: The genre of the coursebook 327 $aFrom theory to practiceThe plane of expression; Conclusion; 6 Humanizing the Coursebook; Introduction; Humanizing without the coursebook; Partial replacement of the coursebook; Humanizing with the coursebook; Developing humanistic coursebooks; Conclusion; 7 The Visual Elements in EFL Coursebooks; Introduction; Visuals in recent British coursebooks; What might we do with visuals in coursebooks?; Conclusion; 8 Creative Approaches to Writing Materials; Introduction; Part I: What is creativity?; How has creativity been applied?; Part II : Ideas for generating creative materials; Conclusion 327 $a9 Developing Digital Language Learning MaterialsIntroduction; Teacher-created digital materials; Student-created digital materials; Publisher- /Professionally created digital materials; Looking to the future; 10 Demystifying Blended Learning; Introduction; A framework for blended language learning; Blended learning tools; Blended language learning case studies; Conclusion; Comments on Part B; Part C Developing Materials for Target Groups; 11 Authors' Knowledge, Rationales and Principles - Steady Flow-Through or Stuck in the Publishing Pipeline?
