Evidence for this study has been gleaned from a variety of sources, including court documents, coroners'records, prison files, parliamentary papers, and newspapers. Through these sources, many of which are rarely used by scholars, attitudes towards the crime, the women accused of the offence, and the victim, are revealed. Although infant murder was a capital offence during this period, none of thewomen found guilty of the crime were executed, suggesting a degree of sympathy and understanding towards the accused. Infanticide cases also allude to complex dynamics and tensions between employers and servants, parents and pregnant daughters, judges and defendants, and prison authorities andinmates. This book highlights much about the lived realities of nineteenth-century Ireland. 606 $aInfanticide$xLaw and legislation$zIreland$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aInfanticide$zIreland$vCase studies 606 $aInfanticide$zIreland$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aSOCIAL SCIENCE / Children's Studies$2bisacsh 610 $aInfanticide 610 $aIreland 610 $aSocial Science 610 $aHistory 615 0$aInfanticide$xLaw and legislation$xHistory 615 0$aInfanticide 615 0$aInfanticide$xHistory 615 7$aSOCIAL SCIENCE / Children's Studies. 676 $a364.1523 700 $aFarrell$b Elaine$01160607 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910797825303321 996 $aA most diabolical deed$93691092 997 $aUNINA
