Rebellion: Creating a New Black Cinema is the first book dedicated to the films and filmmakers of the L.A. Rebellion, a group of African, Caribbean, and African American independent film and video artists that formed at the University of California, Los Angeles, in the 1970's and 1980's. The group-including Charles Burnett, Julie Dash, Haile Gerima, Billy Woodberry, Jamaa Fanaka, and Zeinabu irene Davis-shared a desire to create alternatives to the dominant modes of narrative, style, and practice in American cinema, works that reflected the full complexity of Black experiences. This landmark collection of essays and oral histories examines the creative output of the L.A. Rebellion, contextualizing the group's film practices and offering sustained analyses of the wide range of works, with particular attention to newly discovered films and lesser-known filmmakers. Based on extensive archival work and preservation, this collection includes a complete filmography of the movement, over 100 illustrations (most of which are previously unpublished), and a bibliography of primary and secondary materials. This is an indispensable sourcebook for scholars and enthusiasts, establishing the key role played by the L.A. Rebellion within the histories of cinema, Black visual culture, and postwar art in Los Angeles. 606 $aAfrican American motion picture producers and directors$zCalifornia$zLos Angeles$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aIndependent filmmakers$zCalifornia$zLos Angeles$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aIndependent films$zCalifornia$zLos Angeles$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aExperimental films$zCalifornia$zLos Angeles$xHistory$y20th century 610 $a20th century american film. 610 $aafrican american filmmakers. 610 $aafrican filmmakers. 610 $aalternative film. 610 $aamerican cinema. 610 $aarchival work. 610 $abilly woodberry. 610 $ablack cinema. 610 $ablack experience. 610 $ablack visual culture. 610 $acaribbean filmmakers. 610 $acharles burnett. 610 $acinema. 610 $acritical analysis. 610 $afilm and television. 610 $afilm studies. 610 $afilmography. 610 $ahaile gerima. 610 $ahollywood. 610 $ajamaa fanaka. 610 $ajulie dash. 610 $ala rebellion. 610 $amovie theory. 610 $anew black cinema. 610 $apolitical. 610 $apostwar art. 610 $arebellion. 610 $aucla. 610 $auniversity of california los angeles. 610 $avideo artists. 610 $azeinabu irene davis. 615 0$aAfrican American motion picture producers and directors$xHistory 615 0$aIndependent filmmakers$xHistory 615 0$aIndependent films$xHistory 615 0$aExperimental films$xHistory 676 $a791.43089/96073 702 $aField$b Allyson Nadia$f1976- 702 $aHorak$b Jan-Christopher 702 $aStewart$b Jacqueline Najuma$f1970- 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910797784703321 996 $aL.
