These monumental charitable institutions were urban expressions of sovereignty. Keyvanian traces the political reasons for their emergence and their architectural type in Europe around 1200. In Rome, hospitals ballasted the corporate image of social elites, aided in settling and garrisoning vital sectors and were the hubs around which strategies aimed at territorial control revolved. When the strategies faltered, the institutions were rapidly abandoned. Hospitals in areas of enduring significance instead still function, bearing testimony to the influence of late medieval urban interventions on modern Rome. 410 0$aBrill's studies in intellectual history ;$vv. 252. 410 0$aBrill's studies in intellectual history.$pBrill's studies on art, art history, and intellectual history ;$vv. 12. 606 $aHospital buildings$zItaly$zRome$xDesign and construction$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aPublic hospitals$zItaly$zRome$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aArchitecture and state$zItaly$zRome$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aCities and towns$xGrowth$zItaly$zRome$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aCity and town life$zItaly$zRome$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aCity planning$zItaly$zRome$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aUrbanization$zItaly$zRome$xHistory$yTo 1500 607 $aRome (Italy)$xBuildings, structures, etc 607 $aRome (Italy)$xSocial conditions 607 $aRome (Italy)$xPolitics and government 615 0$aHospital buildings$xDesign and construction$xHistory 615 0$aPublic hospitals$xHistory 615 0$aArchitecture and state$xHistory 615 0$aCities and towns$xGrowth$xHistory 615 0$aCity and town life$xHistory 615 0$aCity planning$xHistory 615 0$aUrbanization$xHistory 676 $a725/.510945632 700 $aKeyvanian$b Carla$01578564 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910797745403321 996 $aHospitals and urbanism in Rome, 1200-1500$93858052 997 $aUNINA
