Vanier, one of the most eminent public figures of Canada. His broad interests and deep involvement in all aspects of Canadian life are reflected in these speeches. A life-long concern with the importance of the family is evident in his opening talk at the Canadian Conference on the Family in 1964: ";...the best and surest way of developing generous and idealistic hearts, of giving the community men and women who are well-balanced and conscious of their responsibilities to their country, is to protect the family, for the family...is capable of giving to the universe the human beings who are prepared to put justice and truth before their own personal interests."; From this conference emerged the Vanier Institute of the Family.Closely allied to the Governor-General's dedication to the family was his interest in the youth of the country. During his time of office he strove continually to bring Canadians to a fuller realization of the importance of their young people: ";Tell me the character of a nation's young people and I will tell you the future of the nation.";The book also includes the core of the Governor General's statements on education, reflections that have special meaning for every teacher and educator in Canada. His views on public life and on the democratic ideal, and his great desire for better understanding between English and French Canadians and for the essential unity of the Canadian nation, also hold a place of prominence in these excerpts. The final section of the book is devoted to his intense concern for the spiritual side of man's existence, for the ideals and values that set man apart and allow him to hope for a better world.Dr Wilder Penfield, head of the Vanier Institute of the Family, who was a close friend of the Governor General, and Claude Ryan, editor of Le Devoir, have written forewords for the volume. 606 $aFamilies$zCanada$xHistory 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aFamilies$xHistory. 676 $a327.20924 700 $aVanier$b Georges P$g(Georges Philias),$f1888-1967,$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01067552 702 $aCowley$b George$f1930- 702 $aVanier$b Michel 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910149430603321 996 $aOnly to serve$92551433 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04003nam 2200733 450 001 9910797064403321 005 20230617013742.0 010 $a0-8093-8899-5 035 $a(CKB)3710000000365843 035 $a(EBL)1979886 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001438249 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12476742 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001438249 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11376387 035 $a(PQKB)10908739 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1979886 035 $a(OCoLC)607039529 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse45725 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1979886 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11030718 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL746656 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000365843 100 $a20021205h20032003 uy| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$aLanguage diversity in the classroom $efrom intention to practice /$fedited by Geneva Smitherman and Victor Villanueva ; foreword by Suresh Canagarajah 210 1$aCarbondale :$cSouthern Illinois University Press,$d[2003] 210 4$dİ2003 215 $a1 online resource (183 p.) 225 1 $aStudies in writing & rhetoric 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a0-8093-2532-2 311 $a1-336-15370-9 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aForeword / Suresh Canagarajah -- Resolution from students' right to their own language and national language policy statement of CCCC -- Introduction / Geneva Smitherman and Victor Villanueva -- The historical struggle for language rights in CCCC / Geneva Smitherman -- Race, class(es), gender, and age : the making of knowledge about language diversity / Elaine Richardson -- The expanding frontier of world Englishes : a new perspective for teachers of English / Victoria Cliett -- Language diversity in teacher education and in the classroom / Arnetha F. Language Diversity in the Classroom: From Intention to Practice works to realign these conceptions through a series of provocative yet evenhanded essays that explore the ways we have enacted and continue to enact our beliefs in the integrity of the many languages and Englishes that arise both in the classroom and in professional communities.
