Framed by the symbolic death of Christ re-enacted during the Mass, the historical account of the Passion on the retable situated Christ's suffering and triumph over death in the present. The dramatic gestures, contemporary garb, and wealth of anecdotal detail on the altarpiece, invited the viewer's absorption in the narrative. As in the Imitatio Christi , the worshiper imaginatively projected himself into the story like a child before a dollhouse. The five senses, the sculptural medium, the small scale, and the rhetoric of memory foster this immersion. 410 0$aBrill's Studies in Intellectual History$vv. 279. 410 0$aBrill's studies in intellectual history.$pBrill's studies on art, art history, and intellectual history ;$vv. 26. 606 $aPublic worship$xHistory 606 $aAltarpieces, Medieval 606 $aChurch history$yMiddle Ages, 600-1500 606 $aFaith 606 $aAltarpieces, Medieval$2fast 606 $aChurch history$xMiddle Ages$2fast 606 $aFaith$2fast 606 $aPassion of Jesus Christ$2fast 606 $aPublic worship$2fast 608 $aArt.$2fast 608 $aHistory.$2fast 615 0$aPublic worship$xHistory. 615 0$aAltarpieces, Medieval. 615 0$aChurch history 615 0$aFaith. 615 7$aAltarpieces, Medieval. 615 7$aChurch history$xMiddle Ages. 615 7$aFaith. 615 7$aPassion of Jesus Christ. 615 7$aPublic worship. 676 $a247/.1 700 $aSadler$b Donna L$0966656 801 0$bNL-LeKB 801 1$bNL-LeKB 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910796785503321 996 $aTouching the Passion--seeing late medieval altarpieces through the eyes of faith$93845921 997 $aUNINA
