Ranging geographically from Italy, Spain, and the Low Countries to Chile, Mexico, and the Philippines and chronologically from the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries, these studies variously consider pain and suffering as somatic, emotional, and psychological experiences. From examination of bodies shown victimized by brutal public torture to the sublimation of physical suffering conveyed through the incised lines of Counter-Reformation engravings, the authors consider depictions of pain and suffering as conduits to the divine or as guides to social behaviour; indeed, often the two functions overlap. 410 0$aBrill's studies in intellectual history ;$vv. 277. 410 0$aBrill's studies in intellectual history.$pBrill's studies on art, art history, and intellectual history ;$vv. 24. 606 $aArt, Spanish colonial$xThemes, motives 606 $aArt, European$xThemes, motives 606 $aSuffering in art 606 $aPain in art 615 0$aArt, Spanish colonial$xThemes, motives. 615 0$aArt, European$xThemes, motives. 615 0$aSuffering in art. 615 0$aPain in art. 676 $a700.108 702 $aKilroy-Ewbank$b Lauren 702 $aGraham$b Heather$f1978- 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910796620103321 996 $aVisualizing sensuous suffering and affective pain in early modern Europe and the Spanish Americas$93806985 997 $aUNINA
