Drawing on new archival evidence and innovative visual analysis to reframe familiar religious discourses, she demonstrates that depicted topographies advanced and sometimes resisted bodily critiques expressed in scripture, conduct literature, and even legislation. Governing many of these redemptive greenscapes were the figures of Christ and the Virgin Mary, archetypes of purity whose spiritual authority was impossible to ignore, yet whose mysteries posed innumerable moral challenges. The study reveals that bodily status was the fundamental problem of human salvation, in which artists, patrons, and viewers alike had an interpretive stake. 410 0$aBrill's Studies in intellectual history ;$vv. 296. 410 0$aBrill's studies in intellectual history.$pBrill's studies on art, art history, and intellectual history ;$vv. 37. 606 $aHuman figure in art 606 $aArt, Netherlandish 606 $aArt and morals$zBenelux countries 606 $aArts and religion$zBenelux countries 615 0$aHuman figure in art. 615 0$aArt, Netherlandish. 615 0$aArt and morals 615 0$aArts and religion 676 $a743.4 700 $aPearson$b Andrea G.$0896269 801 0$bNL-LeKB 801 1$bNL-LeKB 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910795309603321 996 $aGardens of love and the limits of morality in early Netherlandish art$93764982 997 $aUNINA
