In diverse ways, these groups use Guadalupe's symbol and narrative to make claims about justice in society's basic structures (law, policy, institutions, for example) while seeking to generate greater participation and representation in US democracy. Yet, Guadalupe is illegible within a liberal political framework that seeks to protect society's basic structures from religious encroachment by relegating religious speech, practices, and symbols to the realm of the background culture. In response to this problem, religious ethicists have argued for expansions of the liberal framework that would make religious language, arguments, and practices communities legible within a pluralistic society without capitulating to anti-democratic modes of governance that undermine pluralism. What remains unexplored is the way that the aesthetic dimensions of particular religious traditions can be engaged toward cultivating a more participatory democracy that invites substantive contributions to society's common life from religious people and communities. Instead, in conversation with political liberalism, Latinx theological aesthetics, and Catholic social thought, The Aesthetics of Solidarity examines the use of particular religious symbols to make democratic claims and generate greater participation and presence in the life of US democracy. After evaluating liberalism's capacity for constructive engagement with religion toward strengthening democratic participation, the project employs Latinx theological aesthetics and Catholic social thought to offer a constructive framework for interpreting religious symbols in the context of a religiously pluralistic and participatory democratic life"--$cProvided by publisher. 410 0$aMoral Traditions 517 3 $aOur Lady of Guadalupe and American Democracy 606 $aPolitical theology$zUnited State 606 $aChristian sociology$xCatholic church 606 $aGuadalupe, Our Lady of 606 $aSolidarity$xReligious aspects 606 $aSolidarity$xPolitical aspects$zUnited States 606 $aHispanic Americans$xPolitics and government 606 $aHispanic Americans$xReligion 606 $aReligion and politics$zUnited States 606 $aThe?ologie politique$3(CaQQLa)201-0036834$zE?tats-Unis$3(CaQQLa)201-0407727 606 $aDoctrine sociale de l'E?glise$3(CaQQLa)201-0023716 606 $aNuestra Sen?ora de Guadalupe$3(CaQQLa)201-0132135 606 $aAme?ricains d'origine latino-ame?ricaine$xReligion$3(CaQQLa)201-0151611 606 $aReligion et politique$3(CaQQLa)201-0029244$zE?tats-Unis$3(CaQQLa)201-0407727 606 $aSolidarity$xReligious aspects$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01125486 606 $aSolidarity$xPolitical aspects$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01125485 606 $aReligion and politics$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01093842 606 $aPolitical theology$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01069899 606 $aHispanic Americans$xReligion$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00957592 606 $aHispanic Americans$xPolitics and government$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00957586 606 $aGuadalupe, Our Lady of$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00948687 606 $aChristian sociology$xCatholic Church$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00859533 607 $aUnited States$2fast 615 0$aPolitical theology 615 0$aChristian sociology$xCatholic church. 615 0$aGuadalupe, Our Lady of 615 0$aSolidarity$xReligious aspects. 615 0$aSolidarity$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aHispanic Americans$xPolitics and government. 615 0$aHispanic Americans$xReligion. 615 0$aReligion and politics 615 6$aThe?ologie politique 615 6$aDoctrine sociale de l'E?glise. 615 6$aNuestra Sen?ora de Guadalupe. 615 6$aAme?ricains d'origine latino-ame?ricaine$xReligion. 615 6$aReligion et politique 615 7$aSolidarity$xReligious aspects. 615 7$aSolidarity$xPolitical aspects. 615 7$aReligion and politics. 615 7$aPolitical theology. 615 7$aHispanic Americans$xReligion. 615 7$aHispanic Americans$xPolitics and government. 615 7$aGuadalupe, Our Lady of. 615 7$aChristian sociology$xCatholic Church. 676 $a322.10973 700 $aFlores$b Nichole M$01582530 712 02$aProjectc Muse. 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910794551803321 996 $aThe Aesthetics of Solidarity$93865001 997 $aUNINA
