The thoroughly revised edition of this accessible and practical guide offers tools that allow educators to be more reflective and intentional in their work-helping them to consider who they're working with, what they're doing, why they're doing it and how to educate more effectively.New features include:A new chapter, ""The J 606 $aConflict management 606 $aConflict management 606 $aEDUCATION / Adult & Continuing Education 606 $aEDUCATION / General 606 $aMulticulturalism 606 $aMulticulturalism 606 $aSocial conflict 606 $aSocial conflict 606 $aSocial justice 606 $aSocial justice 606 $aSocial psychology 606 $aSocial psychology 606 $aUpper class - Attitudes 606 $aUpper class --Attitudes 606 $aSocial justice$xAttitudes 606 $aMulticulturalism 606 $aUpper class 606 $aSocial conflict 606 $aConflict management 606 $aSocial psychology 606 $aSociology & Social History$2HILCC 606 $aSocial Sciences$2HILCC 606 $aSocial Change$2HILCC 608 $aElectronic books. 615 4$aConflict management. 615 4$aConflict management. 615 4$aEDUCATION / Adult & Continuing Education. 615 4$aEDUCATION / General. 615 4$aMulticulturalism. 615 4$aMulticulturalism. 615 4$aSocial conflict. 615 4$aSocial conflict. 615 4$aSocial justice. 615 4$aSocial justice. 615 4$aSocial psychology. 615 4$aSocial psychology. 615 4$aUpper class - Attitudes. 615 4$aUpper class --Attitudes. 615 0$aSocial justice$xAttitudes 615 0$aMulticulturalism 615 0$aUpper class 615 0$aSocial conflict 615 0$aConflict management 615 0$aSocial psychology 615 7$aSociology & Social History 615 7$aSocial Sciences 615 7$aSocial Change 676 $a303.3/72 676 $a374.015 700 $aGoodman$b Diane J$0966965 801 0$bAU-PeEL 801 1$bAU-PeEL 801 2$bAU-PeEL 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910461334103321 996 $aPromoting Diversity and Social Justice$92195131 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03434oam 22005534a 450 001 9910794322603321 005 20231123230433.0 010 $a0-253-04998-9 035 $a(CKB)4100000011469986 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC6357215 035 $a(OCoLC)1287098375 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)musev2_97606 035 $a(EXLCZ)994100000011469986 100 $a20200303d2020 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $auruz#---auuuu 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aStorytelling in Opera and Musical Theater$fNina Penner 210 1$d2020.$cIndiana University Press,$aBloomington : 215 $a1 online resource (xxvi, 281 pages : illustrations, music) 225 0 $aMusical meaning and interpretation 311 $a0-253-04996-2 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aOverture -- What Is a Narrative? -- Telling, Operatically -- Character-Narrators -- Orchestral Narration and Authorial Commentary -- Character-Focused Narration -- Works and Performances -- Performances of Works -- Performances as Works -- Finale. 330 $a"Storytelling in Opera and Musical Theater is the first systematic exploration of how sung forms of drama tell stories. Through examples from opera's origins to contemporary musicals, Nina Penner examines the roles of character-narrators and how they differ from those in literary and cinematic works, how music can orient spectators to characters' points of view, how being privy to characters' inner thoughts and feelings may evoke feelings of sympathy or empathy, and how performers' choices affect not only who is telling the story but what story is being told. Unique about Penner's approach is her engagement with current work in analytic philosophy. Her study reveals not only the resources this philosophical tradition can bring to musicology but those which musicology can bring to philosophy, challenging and refining accounts of narrative, point of view, and the work-performance relationship within both disciplines. She also considers practical problems singers and directors confront on a daily basis, such as what to do about Wagner's Jewish caricatures and the racism of Orientalist operas. More generally, Penner reflects on how centuries-old works remain meaningful to contemporary audiences and have the power to attract new, more diverse audiences to opera and musical theater. By exploring how practitioners past and present have addressed these issues, she offers suggestions for how opera and musical theater can continue to entertain and enrich the lives of 21st century audiences"--$cProvided by publisher. 410 0$aMusical meaning and interpretation 606 $aStorytelling$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01134169 606 $aOpera$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01046145 606 $aMusical theater$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01030807 608 $aLivres nume?riques. 610 0$aThe?a?tre musical. 610 0$aOpera seria. 610 0$aArt de conter. 610 0$aStorytelling. 610 0$aOpera. 610 0$aMusical theater. 615 7$aStorytelling. 615 7$aOpera. 615 7$aMusical theater. 676 $a782.1 700 $aPenner$b Nina$01585209 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910794322603321 996 $aStorytelling in Opera and Musical Theater$93869592 997 $aUNINA
