Combining detailed archival research, participant observation and oral history work, it explores the transformation of three northwestern Russian towns from provincial backwaters into the symbolic homelands of the Soviet and Russian nations. The book's central argument is that the Soviet state exploited the cultural heritage of the Northwest to craft patriotic narratives of the people's genius, heroism and strength that could bind the nation together after 1945. Through sustained engagement with local voices, it reveals the ways these narratives were internalized, revised, and resisted by the communities living in the region.Donovan provides an alternative lens through which to view the rise of Russian patriotic consciousness in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, adding a valuable regional dimension to our knowledge of Russian nation building and identity politics. 410 0$aNIU series in Slavic, East European, and Eurasian studies. 410 0$aCornell scholarship online. 606 $aHistoric preservation$xPolitical aspects$zSoviet Union, Northwestern 606 $aHistoric preservation$xPolitical aspects$zRussia, Northwestern 606 $aHistoric buildings$xConservation and restoration$xPolitical aspects$zSoviet Union, Northwestern 606 $aHistoric buildings$xConservation and restoration$xPolitical aspects$zRussia, Northwestern 606 $aCultural property$xProtection$xPolitical aspects$zSoviet Union, Northwestern 606 $aCultural property$xProtection$xPolitical aspects$zRussia, Northwestern 606 $aNationalism and architecture$zSoviet Union 606 $aNationalism and architecture$zRussia (Federation) 606 $aRussians$xEthnic identity 606 $aNational characteristics, Russian 610 $aanthropology, heritage studies, oral history, nationalism, Orthodox Christianity. 615 0$aHistoric preservation$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aHistoric preservation$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aHistoric buildings$xConservation and restoration$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aHistoric buildings$xConservation and restoration$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aCultural property$xProtection$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aCultural property$xProtection$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aNationalism and architecture 615 0$aNationalism and architecture 615 0$aRussians$xEthnic identity. 615 0$aNational characteristics, Russian. 676 $a363.6/909472 700 $aDonovan$b Victoria, $4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01560173 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910793850703321 996 $aChronicles in Stone$93825905 997 $aUNINA
