Metropolitan Life Insurance Company identified obesity as the leading cause of premature death in the United States in the 1930s, but it wasn't until 1951 that the public health and medical communities finally recognized it as "America's Number One Health Problem." The reason for MetLife's interest? They wanted their policyholders to live longer and continue paying their premiums. Early postwar America responded to the obesity emergency, but by the end of the 1960s, the crisis waned and official rates of true obesity were reduced? despite the fact that Americans were growing no thinner. What mid-century factors and forces established obesity as a politically meaningful and culturally resonant problem in the first place? And why did obesity fade from public?and medical?consciousness only a decade later? Based on archival records of health leaders as well as medical and popular literature, Fat in the Fifties is the first book to reconstruct the prewar origins, emergence, and surprising disappearance of obesity as a major public health problem. Author Nicolas Rasmussen explores the postwar shifts that drew attention to obesity, as well as the varied approaches to its treatment: from thyroid hormones to psychoanalysis and weight loss groups. Rasmussen argues that the US government was driven by the new Cold War and the fear of atomic annihilation to heightened anxieties about national fitness. Informed by the latest psychiatric thinking?which diagnosed obesity as the result of oral fixation, just like alcoholism?health professionals promoted a form of weight loss group therapy modeled on Alcoholics Anonymous. The intervention caught on like wildfire in 1950s suburbia. But the sense of crisis passed quickly, partly due to cultural changes associated with the later 1960s and partly due to scientific research, some of it sponsored by the sugar industry, emphasizing particular dietary fats, rather than calorie intake. Through this riveting history of the rise and fall of the obesity epidemic, readers gain an understanding of how the American public health system?ambitious, strong, and second-to-none at the end of the Second World War?was constrained a decade later to focus mainly on nagging individuals to change their lifestyle choices. Fat in the Fifties is required reading for public health practitioners and researchers, physicians, historians of medicine, and anyone concerned about weight and weight loss." -- Publisher's description. 517 1 $aAmerica's first obesity crisis 606 $aObesity$xHistory 607 $aUnited States 615 0$aObesity$xHistory. 676 $a362.1963/9800973 700 $aRasmussen$b Nicolas$f1962-$01511662 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910793596503321 996 $aFat in the fifties$93745107 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02856oas 2201009 a 450 001 9910145270403321 005 20251106213014.0 011 $a1573-3009 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2000906-9 035 $a(DE-599)2000906-9 035 $a(OCoLC)37785646 035 $a(CONSER) 2004233253 035 $a(CKB)954925617094 035 $a(EXLCZ)99954925617094 100 $a19971015a19949999 sy a 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurmnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aEnvironmental and ecological statistics 210 $a[Andover, Hants, United Kingdom] $cChapman & Hall 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 300 $aPublished: Norwell, MA : Kluwer Academic Publishers, <1999-> 311 08$a1352-8505 531 1 $aEnviron. ecol. stat. 606 $aEnvironmental sciences$xStatistical methods$vPeriodicals 606 $aEcology$xStatistical methods$vPeriodicals 606 $aSciences de l'environnement$xMe?thodes statistiques$vPe?riodiques 606 $aE?cologie$xMe?thodes statistiques$vPe?riodiques 606 $aEcology$xStatistical methods$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00901539 606 $aEnvironmental sciences$xStatistical methods$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00913513 606 $aMedi ambient$2thub 606 $aEcologia$2thub 606 $aEstadística matemàtica$2thub 608 $aPeriodical. 608 $aperiodicals.$2aat 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2lcgft 608 $aPe?riodiques.$2rvmgf 608 $aRevistes electròniques.$2thub 615 0$aEnvironmental sciences$xStatistical methods 615 0$aEcology$xStatistical methods 615 6$aSciences de l'environnement$xMe?thodes statistiques 615 6$aE?cologie$xMe?thodes statistiques 615 7$aEcology$xStatistical methods. 615 7$aEnvironmental sciences$xStatistical methods. 615 7$aMedi ambient. 615 7$aEcologia. 615 7$aEstadística matemàtica. 676 $a363.7 712 02$aChapman and Hall, 801 0$bF#A 801 1$bF#A 801 2$bOCL 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bAGL 801 2$bMUQ 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bGUA 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCL 801 2$bCIT 801 2$bGUA 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bAU@ 801 2$bVT2 801 2$bNJT 801 2$bAUD 801 2$bDLC 801 2$bUBY 801 2$bSFB 801 2$bUEJ 801 2$bQGK 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bIOY 801 2$bSXB 801 2$bOCLCL 801 2$bOCLCQ 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910145270403321 996 $aEnvironmental and ecological statistics$91940895 997 $aUNINA
