While many painful issues have been addressed and Jews and Christians in dialogue have achieved a solid respect for each other, the basic disagreement over the Christian designation of Jesus as the Jewish messiah still stands. Theologians have suggested varying approaches but none convince both parties. This work employs William James' radical empirical method to show that the original Jewish messianic concept, the Christian shift, and the Jewish repudiation of the shift, can each be seen as valid faith variants. 410 0$aJudaism and Jewish life. 606 $aMessiah 606 $aChristianity and other religions$xJudaism 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aMessiah. 615 0$aChristianity and other religions$xJudaism. 676 $a261.2/6 700 $aWyse$b Marion$01037068 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910457858303321 996 $aVariations on the messianic theme$92457770 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04994 am 22005173u 450 001 9910309745903321 005 20220201183446.0 010 $a90-04-37587-2 024 7 $a10.1163/9789004375871 035 $a(CKB)4960000000012335 035 $a(nllekb)BRILL9789004375871 035 $a(oapen)https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28838 035 $a(PPN)264548531 035 $a(EXLCZ)994960000000012335 100 $a20210425d2018 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurun####uuuua 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cn$2rdamedia 183 $anc$2rdacarrier 200 00$aDomestic devotions in early modern Italy /$fedited by Maya Corry, Marco Faini, Alessia Meneghin 210 $aLeiden; Boston$cBrill$d2018 210 1$aLeiden ;$aBoston :$cBrill,$d2018. 215 $a1 online resource 225 0 $aIntersections : interdisciplinary studies in early modern culture,$x1568-1181 ;$vVOLUME 59/1 - 2018 311 $a90-04-34256-7 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $tFront Matter --$tCopyright page --$tAcknowledgments --$tIllustrations --$tNotes on the Editors --$tNotes on the Contributors --$tIntroduction /$rMaya Corry , Marco Faini and Alessia Meneghin --$tThe Unbounded Nature of Domestic Space --$tSinging on the Street and in the Home in Times of Pestilence: Lessons from the 1576-78 Plague of Milan /$rRemi Chiu --$tThe Ex Voto between Domestic and Public Space: From Personal Testimony to Collective Memory /$rJane Garnett and Gervase Rosser --$tSpaces for Domestic Devotion in the Noble Residences of Palermo in the Age of Catholic Reform /$rValeria Viola --$tMusic and Domestic Devotion in the Age of Reform /$rIain Fenlon --$tDomesticating the Divine --$tDomestic Portraiture in Early Modern Venice: Devotion to Family and Faith /$rMargaret A. Scholarship on Catholicism has tended to focus on institutions, but the home was the site of religious instruction and reading, prayer and meditation, communal worship, multi-sensory devotions, contemplation of religious images and the performance of rituals, as well as extraordinary events such as miracles. Drawing on a wide range of sources, this volume affirms the central place of the household to spiritual life and reveals the myriad ways in which devotion met domestic needs. The seventeen essays encompass religious history, the histories of art and architecture, material culture, musicology, literary history, and social and cultural history.
