Leonhard Herrmann zeigt, dass Heinses Roman gerade in dieser Beschaffenheit als Ausdruck eines philosophisch-literarischen Experiments zu betrachten ist: das empirische Individuum als vollkommen frei von allen sozialen und metaphysischen Determinanten zu denken. Dies unterscheidet ihn erheblich von vergleichbaren deutschsprachigen Werken seiner Zeit und lässt ihn - wie im Rahmen einer rezeptionsgeschichtlichen Analyse deutlich wird - immer wieder zum Gegenstand begeisterter Lektüren werden. Noch im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts wird versucht, den Roman in den entstehenden ,Klassiker'-Kanon zu integrieren - ein Versuch, der schließlich an den Differenzen zu den ,klassischen' Werken Goethes und Schillers scheitert. Um 1900 wird Heinses Roman daher zum Klassiker jenseits der Klassik.
