Observer les autres sociétés, les coutumes de populations différentes, se transporter ailleurs, partir comprendre sous d'autres cieux, chercher à comparer les gouvernements républicains anciens, nouveaux ou en gestation, ouvrir sa curiosité à un cosmopolitisme des nations, découvrir d'autres modèles politiques que le sien, tout cela devient une sorte de propédeutique tantôt spontanée, tantôt bien organisée, parfois forcée. Il en résulte un transfert d'idées, de personnes et d'expériences que l'aire et l'ère des révolutions atlantiques ont rendu possible depuis le début de la Révolution américaine jusqu'aux premières révolutions du XIXe siècle naissant. Les deux univers du périple et de la citoyenneté s'enrichissent l'un par l'autre, le voyage politique se réinvente de façon originale dans l'exil, dans la conquête, dans l'expédition savante, dans la visite accomplie seul ou en groupe. La pratique du voyage se régénère dans le sens nouveau que lui donnent les républicains des Lumières et des Révolutions.
