Some parties distribute goods and services broadly, even to members of other parties or other faiths, while others allocate services more narrowly to their own base. In Compassionate Communalism, Melani Cammett analyzes the political logics of sectarianism through the lens of social welfare. On the basis of years of research into the varying welfare distribution strategies of Christian, Shia Muslim, and Sunni Muslim political parties in Lebanon, Cammett shows how and why sectarian groups deploy welfare benefits for such varied goals as attracting marginal voters, solidifying intraconfessional support, mobilizing mass support, and supporting militia fighters.Cammett then extends her arguments with novel evidence from the Sadrist movement in post-Saddam Iraq and the Bharatiya Janata Party in contemporary India, other places where religious and ethnic organizations provide welfare as part of their efforts to build political support. Nonstate welfare performs a critical function in the absence of capable state institutions, Cammett finds, but it comes at a price: creating or deepening social divisions, sustaining rival visions of the polity, or introducing new levels of social inequality.Compassionate Communalism is informed by Cammett's use of many methods of data collection and analysis, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis of the location of hospitals and of religious communities; a large national survey of Lebanese citizens regarding access to social welfare; standardized open-ended interviews with representatives from political parties, religious charities, NGOs, and government ministries, as well as local academics and journalists; large-scale proxy interviewing of welfare beneficiaries conducted by trained Lebanese graduate students matched with coreligionist respondents; archival research; and field visits to schools, hospitals, clinics, and other social assistance programs as well as political party offices throughout the country. 606 $aCharities$zLebanon 606 $aHuman services$zLebanon 606 $aCommunalism$zLebanon 610 $asocial welfare, hezbollah, political logics of sectarianism, access to welfare in lebanon. 615 0$aCharities 615 0$aHuman services 615 0$aCommunalism 676 $a361.7095692 700 $aCammett$b Melani Claire$f1969-$0769707 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910792151903321 996 $aCompassionate communalism$93697958 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01454nam0 22002651i 450 001 UON00018263 005 20231205102005.435 100 $a20020107d1983 |0itac50 ba 101 $afre 102 $aCS 105 $a|||| 1|||| 200 1 $aˆLa ‰politique de l'état parthe à l'égard de Rome d'Artaban II à Vologèse I (ca 11 - ca 79 de N.E.) et les facteurs qui la conditionnaient$fEdward Dabrowa 210 $aKrakow$cNakladem Uniwersytetu Jagiellonskiego$d1983 182 p. ; 23 cm 410 1$1001UON00018262$12001 $aRozprawy Habilitacyjne$fUniwersytet Jagiellonski$1210 $aKrakowie$cNakladem Uniwersytetu Jagiellonskiego$d19 - v. ; 23 cm$v74 606 $aIRAN$xSTORIA$xPERIODO PARTICO$xRAPPORTI CON L'IMPERO ROMANO$3UONC032566$2FI 620 $aPL$dKrako?w$3UONL000871 686 $aIR IV A$cIRAN ANTICO - STORIA - IRAN INTERNO E PERIFERICO$2A 700 1$aDABROWA$bEdward$3UONV012992$0182159 712 $aNakladem Uniwersytetu Jagiellonskiego$3UONV248770$4650 801 $aIT$bSOL$c20240220$gRICA 899 $aSIBA - SISTEMA BIBLIOTECARIO DI ATENEO$2UONSI 912 $aUON00018263 950 $aSIBA - SISTEMA BIBLIOTECARIO DI ATENEO$dSI IR IV A 031 $eSI SA 54891 5 031 996 $aPolitique de l'état parthe à l'égard de Rome d'Artaban II à Vologèse I (ca 11 - ca 79 de N.E.) et les facteurs qui la conditionnaient$91197986 997 $aUNIOR
