Husband shows how the images of families split apart by slavery, circulated primarily by women leaders, proved to be the most powerful weapon in the antislavery cultural campaign and ultimately turned the nation against slavery. She also reveals the ways in which the sentimental narratives and icons that constituted the "family protection campaign" powerfully influenced Americans sense of the role of government, gender, and race in industrializing America. Chapters examine the writings of ardent abolitionists such as Frederick Douglass, non-activist sympathizers, and those actively hostile to but deeply immersed in antislavery activism including Nathaniel Hawthorne. 606 $aLiterature    606 $aAmerica?Literatures 606 $aLiterature, Modern?19th century 606 $aLiterature?Philosophy 606 $aAfrican Americans 606 $aSocial justice 606 $aHuman rights 606 $aPostcolonial/World Literature$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/838000 606 $aNorth American Literature$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/834000 606 $aNineteenth-Century Literature$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/821000 606 $aLiterary Theory$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/812000 606 $aAfrican American Culture$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/411020 606 $aSocial Justice, Equality and Human Rights$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X33070 615 0$aLiterature   . 615 0$aAmerica?Literatures. 615 0$aLiterature, Modern?19th century. 615 0$aLiterature?Philosophy. 615 0$aAfrican Americans. 615 0$aSocial justice. 615 0$aHuman rights. 615 14$aPostcolonial/World Literature. 615 24$aNorth American Literature. 615 24$aNineteenth-Century Literature. 615 24$aLiterary Theory. 615 24$aAfrican American Culture. 615 24$aSocial Justice, Equality and Human Rights. 676 $a326/.80973 676 $a810.9358 700 $aHusband$b J$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01579838 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910792130503321 996 $aAntislavery Discourse and Nineteenth-Century American Literature$93860214 997 $aUNINA
