In order to separate this new discipline from other historical disciplines, he introduced the historiographical concept ?system of philosophy?. The historian of philosophy should use this concept as a criterion of inclusion of past philosophies, and as an ideal form of exposition. The present book describes the origin of this historiographical notion, its implicit Protestant assumptions, and it traces the concept?s impact upon the methods of history of philosophy and history of ideas, as developed over the following centuries. Finally, it discusses the concept?s strengths and weaknesses as a historiographical tool, arguing that it ought to be given up. 410 0$aBrill's studies in intellectual history ;$vv. 165. 606 $aMethodology 606 $aPhilosophy$xHistoriography 606 $aPhilosophy$xHistory 615 0$aMethodology. 615 0$aPhilosophy$xHistoriography. 615 0$aPhilosophy$xHistory. 676 $a107.2/2 700 $aCatana$b Leo$0933798 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910792116103321 996 $aThe historiographical concept 'system of philosophy$93809076 997 $aUNINA
