Today there are four times that number. In Going Home, the dean of congressional studies, Richard F. Fenno, explores what representation has meant-and means today-to black voters and to the politicians they have elected to office. Fenno follows the careers of four black representatives-Louis Stokes, Barbara Jordan, Chaka Fattah, and Stephanie Tubbs Jones-from their home districts to the halls of the Capitol. He finds that while these politicians had different visions of how they should represent their districts (in part based on their individual preferences, and in part based on the history of black politics in America), they shared crucial organizational and symbolic connections to their constituents. These connections, which draw on a sense of "linked fates," are ones that only black representatives can provide to black constituents. His detailed portraits and incisive analyses will be important for anyone interested in the workings of Congress or in black politics. 606 $aAfrican Americans$xPolitics and government$vCase studies 606 $aAfrican American legislators$vCase studies 610 $arepresentation, voters, black politicians, stephanie tubbs jones, chaka fattah, barbara jordan, louis stokes, district, capitol, legislators, politics, history, nonfiction, constituency, constituents, congress, communication, government, diversity, inclusion, influence, personal goals, experience, strategy, negotiation, connections, liberty hill baptist church, campaign, dewey street award program, party, protection, minority, race, racism, discrimination, bias, political science. 615 0$aAfrican Americans$xPolitics and government 615 0$aAfrican American legislators 676 $a328.73/092/396073 700 $aFenno$b Richard F.$f1926-$0255549 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910791985703321 996 $aGoing home$93723237 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04270nam 22007215 450 001 9910483414903321 005 20251226193535.0 010 $a3-319-07788-0 024 7 $a10.1007/978-3-319-07788-8 035 $a(CKB)3710000000119180 035 $a(DE-He213)978-3-319-07788-8 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001242091 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11739127 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001242091 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11259962 035 $a(PQKB)11120839 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3092955 035 $a(PPN)178783048 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000119180 100 $a20140517d2014 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurnn#008mamaa 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aDistributed, Ambient, and Pervasive Interactions $eSecond International Conference, DAPI 2014, Held as Part of HCI International 2014, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, June 22-27, 2014, Proceedings /$fedited by Norbert Streitz, Panos Markopoulos 205 $a1st ed. 2014. 210 1$aCham :$cSpringer International Publishing :$cImprint: Springer,$d2014. 215 $a1 online resource (XXIV, 643 p. 284 illus.) 225 1 $aInformation Systems and Applications, incl. The total of 1476 papers and 220 posters presented at the HCII 2014 conferences were carefully reviewed and selected from 4766 submissions. These papers address the latest research and development efforts and highlight the human aspects of design and use of computing systems. The papers accepted for presentation thoroughly cover the entire field of Human-Computer Interaction, addressing major advances in knowledge and effective use of computers in a variety of application areas. The 58 papers included in this volume are organized in topical sections on design frameworks and models for intelligent interactive environments; natural interaction; cognitive, perceptual and emotional issues in ambient intelligence; user experience in intelligent environments; developing distributed, pervasive and intelligent environments; smart cities. 410 0$aInformation Systems and Applications, incl.
