In seven beautifully written, closely related essays, Kerwin Lee Klein traces the development of academic vocabularies through the dynamically shifting cultural, political, and linguistic landscapes of the twentieth century. He considers the rise and fall of "philosophy of history" and discusses past attempts to imbue historical discourse with scientific precision. He explores the development of the "meta-narrative" and the post-Marxist view of history and shows how the present resurgence of old words-such as "memory"-in new contexts is providing a way to address marginalized peoples. In analyzing linguistic changes in the North American academy, From History to Theory innovatively ties semantic shifts in academic discourse to key trends in American society, culture, and politics. 606 $aHistoriography$zUnited States$xMethodology 606 $aHistoriography$zUnited States$xHistory 606 $aLinguistic change$zUnited States$xHistory 606 $aHistory$vTerminology 606 $aReligion$vTerminology 606 $aDiscourse analysis 606 $aSocial change$zUnited States$xHistory 607 $aUnited States$xHistory$xPhilosophy 610 $a20th century. 610 $aacademia. 610 $aacademic vocabulary. 610 $aamerican culture. 610 $aamerican politics. 610 $aamerican society. 610 $achanging contexts. 610 $acultural historians. 610 $acultural landscape. 610 $aessay collection. 610 $ahistorians. 610 $ahistorical perspective. 610 $ahistory. 610 $ahumanities. 610 $alanguage shifts. 610 $alinguistic changes. 610 $alinguistic landscape. 610 $amarginalized peoples. 610 $anonfiction essays. 610 $anorth america. 610 $aperspective shifts. 610 $aphilosophy of history. 610 $apolitical landscape. 610 $apost marxism. 610 $asemantics. 610 $atheoretical concepts. 610 $atheoretical perspective. 610 $atheory. 615 0$aHistoriography$xMethodology. 615 0$aHistoriography$xHistory. 615 0$aLinguistic change$xHistory. 615 0$aHistory 615 0$aReligion 615 0$aDiscourse analysis. 615 0$aSocial change$xHistory. 676 $a901 686 $a15.02$2bcl 700 $aKlein$b Kerwin Lee$f1961-$01490381 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910791976203321 996 $aFrom history to theory$93711731 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01442nas 2200457-a 450 001 9910170623603321 005 20240413024444.0 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2943607-2 035 $a(CKB)111027698291020 035 $a(CONSER)---00229855- 035 $a(EXLCZ)99111027698291020 100 $a20000501a20009999 --- a 101 0 $aeng 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aMaryland medicine $eMM : a publication of MEDCHI, the Maryland State Medical Society 210 $aRockville, MD $cMaryland State Medical Society$d2000- 215 $a1 online resource 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 311 08$aPrint version: Maryland medicine (Rockville, Md.) 1538-2656 (DLC) 00229855 (OCoLC)43956000 517 3 $aMM 531 $aMD MED 531 0 $aMd. med. 606 $aMedicine$zMaryland$vPeriodicals 606 $aMedicine$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01014893 606 $aMedicine 607 $aMontgomery County (Md.) 607 $aMaryland$2fast$1https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJkxFCqq7cQBtvRGb9J7HC 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 608 $aPeriodical. 615 0$aMedicine 615 7$aMedicine. 615 12$aMedicine. 676 $a610 712 02$aMaryland State Medical Society. 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910170623603321 920 $aexl_impl conversion 996 $aMaryland medicine$92018473 997 $aUNINA LEADER 05834oam 22012974 450 001 9910968749103321 005 20251116183909.0 010 $a9786613823625 010 $a9781462306404 010 $a1462306403 010 $a9781452707754 010 $a1452707758 010 $a9781283437721 010 $a1283437724 010 $a9781451910070 010 $a145191007X 035 $a(CKB)3360000000443358 035 $a(EBL)3012520 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000949413 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11509018 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000949413 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10997656 035 $a(PQKB)10431665 035 $a(OCoLC)568151229 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3012520 035 $a(IMF)WPIEE2006294 035 $a(IMF)WPIEA2006294 035 $aWPIEA2006294 035 $a(EXLCZ)993360000000443358 100 $a20020129d2006 uf 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcn||||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aEffects of Globalization on Labor?s Share in National Income /$fAnastasia Guscina 205 $a1st ed. 210 1$aWashington, D.C. :$cInternational Monetary Fund,$d2006. 215 $a1 online resource (35 p.) 225 1 $aIMF Working Papers 300 $a"December 2006." 311 08$a9781451865547 311 08$a1451865546 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (p. 32-33). 327 $a""Contents""; ""I. Capital-Augmenting Technological Progress""; ""References"" 330 3 $aThe past two decades have seen a decline in labor's share of national income in several industrial countries. This paper analyzes the role of three factors in explaining movements in labor's share--factor-biased technological progress, openness to trade, and changes in employment protection--using a panel of 18 industrial countries over 1960-2000. Since most studies suggest that globalization and rapid technological progress (associated with accelerated information technology development) began in the mid-1980s, the sample is split in 1985 into preglobalization/pre-IT revolution and postglobalization/post-IT revolution eras. The results suggest that the decline in labor's share during the past few decades in the OECD member countries may have been largely an equilibrium, rather than a cyclical, phenomenon, as the distribution of national income between labor and capital adjusted to capital-augmenting technological progress and a more globalized world economy. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/294 606 $aNational income$zDeveloped countries$xEconometric models 606 $aForeign trade and employment$zDeveloped countries 606 $aWages and labor productivity$zDeveloped countries 606 $aEmployees$xEffect of technological innovations on$zDeveloped countries 606 $aWages$xEffect of technological innovations on$zDeveloped countries 606 $aWage bargaining$zDeveloped countries 606 $aGlobalization 606 $aAggregate Human Capital$2imf 606 $aAggregate Labor Productivity$2imf 606 $aEconomic theory$2imf 606 $aEmployment protection$2imf 606 $aEmployment$2imf 606 $aEnvironmental Accounts$2imf 606 $aIncome economics$2imf 606 $aIntergenerational Income Distribution$2imf 606 $aLabor Contracts$2imf 606 $aLabor economics$2imf 606 $aLabor Economics: General$2imf 606 $aLabor share$2imf 606 $aLabor$2imf 606 $aLabour$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aManpower policy$2imf 606 $aMeasurement and Data on National Income and Product Accounts and Wealth$2imf 606 $aNational income$2imf 606 $aUnemployment$2imf 606 $aWages$2imf 606 $aWages, Compensation, and Labor Costs: General$2imf 607 $aUnited States$2imf 615 0$aNational income$xEconometric models. 615 0$aForeign trade and employment 615 0$aWages and labor productivity 615 0$aEmployees$xEffect of technological innovations on 615 0$aWages$xEffect of technological innovations on 615 0$aWage bargaining 615 0$aGlobalization. 615 7$aAggregate Human Capital 615 7$aAggregate Labor Productivity 615 7$aEconomic theory 615 7$aEmployment protection 615 7$aEmployment 615 7$aEnvironmental Accounts 615 7$aIncome economics 615 7$aIntergenerational Income Distribution 615 7$aLabor Contracts 615 7$aLabor economics 615 7$aLabor Economics: General 615 7$aLabor share 615 7$aLabor 615 7$aLabour 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aManpower policy 615 7$aMeasurement and Data on National Income and Product Accounts and Wealth 615 7$aNational income 615 7$aUnemployment 615 7$aWages 615 7$aWages, Compensation, and Labor Costs: General 700 $aGuscina$b Anastasia$01815669 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund.$bWestern Hemisphere Department. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910968749103321 996 $aEffects of Globalization on Labor?s Share in National Income$94371213 997 $aUNINA
