But its origins stem from the early modern period, in medieval iconographies of sacred kinship and the critique of traditional sovereignty mounted by Hobbes and Spinoza. In this book, Graham Hammill and Julia Reinhard Lupton assemble established and emerging scholars in early modern studies to examine the role played by sixteenth- and seventeenth-century literature and thought in modern conceptions of political theology. Political Theology and Early Modernity explores texts by Shakespeare, Machiavelli, Milton, and others that have served as points of departure for such thinkers as Schmitt, Strauss, Benjamin, and Arendt. Written from a spectrum of positions ranging from renewed defenses of secularism to attempts to reconceive the religious character of collective life and literary experience, these essays probe moments of productive conflict, disavowal, and entanglement in politics and religion as they pass between early modern and modern scenes of thought. This stimulating collection is the first to answer not only how Renaissance and baroque literature help explain the persistence of political theology in modernity and postmodernity, but also how the reemergence of political theology as an intellectual and political problem deepens our understanding of the early modern period. 606 $aPolitical theology$xHistory 606 $aPolitical theology$xHistoriography 610 $apolitical theology, modernity, medieval, iconography, kinship, sacred, holiness, divinity, sovereignty, hobbes, spinoza, shakespeare, machiavelli, milton, schmitt, strauss, benjamin, arendt, secularism, religion, philosophy, christianity, spirituality, nonfiction, collectivism, community, society, politics, history, renaissance, baroque, literature, postmodernity, hamlet or hecuba, corpus mysticum, judaism, kantorowicz, islam, justice, violence, war, marriage, gender, queen elizabeth. 615 0$aPolitical theology$xHistory. 615 0$aPolitical theology$xHistoriography. 676 $a322/.1094 701 $aHammill$b Graham L$01519042 701 $aLupton$b Julia Reinhard$f1963-$0793172 701 $aBalibar$b Etienne$f1942-$0381689 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910791925003321 996 $aPolitical theology and early modernity$93756922 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02677nam 2200481 450 001 9910807968403321 005 20230807202811.0 010 $a3-95934-246-2 035 $a(CKB)4330000000003303 035 $a(EBL)4455676 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4455676 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL4455676 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11177759 035 $a(OCoLC)945874095 035 $a(EXLCZ)994330000000003303 100 $a20160407h20152015 uy 0 101 0 $ager 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $2rdacontent 182 $2rdamedia 183 $2rdacarrier 200 10$aZur Integration ausla?ndischer Studierender und Fo?rderung Interkultureller Kompetenz $eEine empirische Studie zu sozialen Freundschaftsnetzwerken ausla?ndischer Studierender an der Universita?t Heidelberg /$fAbdelaziz Bouchara 210 1$aHamburg, [Germany] :$cDiplomica Verlag,$d2015. 210 4$d©2015 215 $a1 online resource (96 p.) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a3-95934-746-4 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references. 327 $aZur Integration ausla?ndischer Studierender und Fo?rderung Interkultureller Kompetenz: Eine empirische Studie zu sozialen Freundschaftsnetzwerken ausla?ndischer Studierender an der Universita?t Heidelberg; Inhaltsverzeichnis; Abbildungsverzeichnis; 1.
