The most elaborate of the state-supported homeland tours that are cropping up all over the world, this tour seeks to foster in the American Jewish diaspora a lifelong sense of attachment to Israel based on ethnic and political solidarity. Over a half-billion dollars (and counting) has been spent cultivating this attachment, and despite 9/11 and the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict the tours are still going strong.Based on over seven years of first-hand observation in modern day Israel, Shaul Kelner provides an on-the-ground look at this hotly debated and widely emulated use of tourism to forge transnational ties. We ride the bus, attend speeches with the Prime Minister, hang out in the hotel bar, and get a fresh feel for young American Jewish identity and contemporary Israel. We see how tourism's dynamism coupled with the vibrant human agency of the individual tourists inevitably complicate tour leaders' efforts to rein tourism in and bring it under control. By looking at the broader meaning of tourism, Kelner brings to light the contradictions inherent in the tours and the ways that people understandtheir relationship to place both materially and symbolically. Rich in detail, engagingly written, and sensitive to the complexities of modern travel and modern diaspora Jewishness, Tours that Bind offers a new way of thinking about tourism as a way through which people develop understandings of place, society, and self. 606 $aTourism$zIsrael 606 $aHeritage tourism$zIsrael 606 $aJews$xTravel$zIsrael 606 $aJews$zUnited States$xIdentity 610 $a10-day. 610 $a1999. 610 $aAmerican. 610 $aBased. 610 $aBirthright. 610 $aIsrael. 610 $aJews. 610 $aKelner. 610 $aShaul. 610 $aSince. 610 $aall-expense-paid. 610 $aeffort. 610 $afirst-hand. 610 $aforge. 610 $ahave. 610 $ahundreds. 610 $aknown. 610 $alook. 610 $amodern. 610 $amuch-debated. 610 $amuch-emulated. 610 $aobservation. 610 $aon-the-ground. 610 $aover. 610 $apilgrimage-tour. 610 $aprovides. 610 $aseven. 610 $athis. 610 $athousands. 610 $aties. 610 $atourism. 610 $atransnational. 610 $avisited. 610 $ayears. 610 $ayoung. 615 0$aTourism 615 0$aHeritage tourism 615 0$aJews$xTravel 615 0$aJews$xIdentity. 676 $a338.4/7915694 700 $aKelner$b Shaul$01014520 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910791228303321 996 $aTours that bind$92364458 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03100nam 22008293 450 001 9910883600903321 005 20220805223547.0 010 $a0-8165-4778-5 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC29134253 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL29134253 035 $a(CKB)21399737100041 035 $a(OCoLC)1304241697 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)musev2_100107 035 $a(OCoLC)1306056978 035 $a(BIP)83545034 035 $a(BIP)1275155 035 $a(EXLCZ)9921399737100041 100 $a20220318d2015 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aPreclassic Maya Pottery at Cuello, Belize 205 $a1st ed. 210 1$a:$cUniversity of Arizona Press,$d2015. 210 4$d©1987. 215 $a1 online resource (110 pages) 225 1 $aAnthropological Papers ;$vv.47 311 08$aPrint version: Kosakowsky, Laura J. She details the significant changes in the ceramic sequence and in so doing provides the kind of information that enables other ceramicists, and other Mayanists, to compare the Cuello phenomenon with developments elsewhere. Studies such as these are the building blocks of any larger-scale structural understanding of Maya cultural change."-- Journal of Latin American Studies 410 0$aAnthropological Papers 606 $aFouilles archéologiques$zBelize$2ram 606 $aCéramique maya$2ram 606 $aPräkolumbische Zeit$2gnd 606 $aKeramik$2gnd 606 $aMayas$xAntiquities$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01012778 606 $aMaya pottery$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01012740 606 $aExcavations (Archaeology)$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00917564 606 $aAntiquities$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00810745 606 $aMayas$xAntiquities 606 $aExcavations (Archaeology)$zBelize 606 $aMaya pottery 606 $aMaya$2swd 607 $aBelize$xAntiquites$2ram 607 $aCuello (Belize ; site archéologique)$2ram 607 $aCuello$gBelize$2gnd 607 $aBelize$zCuello Site$2fast 607 $aBelize$2fast 607 $aBelize$xAntiquities 607 $aCuello Site (Belize) 615 7$aFouilles archéologiques 615 7$aCéramique maya. 615 7$aPräkolumbische Zeit. 615 7$aKeramik. 615 7$aMayas$xAntiquities. 615 7$aMaya pottery. 615 7$aExcavations (Archaeology) 615 7$aAntiquities. 615 0$aMayas$xAntiquities. 615 0$aExcavations (Archaeology) 615 0$aMaya pottery. 615 7$aMaya. 676 $a972.82/6 700 $aKosakowsky$b Laura J$01769875 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910883600903321 996 $aPreclassic Maya Pottery at Cuello, Belize$94244449 997 $aUNINA
