This volume proposes on the contrary that the GDR cinema was never just a monologue. Rather, its media landscape was characterized by constant dialogue, if not competition, with both the capitalist West and socialist East. These thirteen essays reshape DEFA cinema studies by exploring international networks, identifying lines of influence beyond national boundaries and recognizing genre qualities that surpass the temporal and spatial confines. The international team of film specialists present detailed analyses of over fifty films, including fiction features, adaptations of literary classics, children's films, documentaries, and examples from genres such as music, sci-fi, Westerns and crime films. With contributions by Seán Allan, Hunter Bivens, Benita Blessing, Barton Byg, Jaimey Fisher, Sabine Hake, Nick Hodgin, Manuel Köppen, Anke Pinkert, Larson Powell, Brad Prager, Marc Silberman, Stefan Soldovieri, and Henning Wrage. 410 0$aCompanions to contemporary German culture ;$vv. 4. 606 $aMotion picture industry$zGermany (East)$xHistory 606 $aMotion pictures$zGermany (East)$xHistory 606 $aMotion pictures$xPolitical aspects$zGermany (East) 606 $aMotion picture industry$xPolitical aspects$zGermany (East) 610 $aDEFA. 610 $aEast Germany. 610 $aFilm Culture. 610 $aGDR. 610 $aMedia History. 615 0$aMotion picture industry$xHistory. 615 0$aMotion pictures$xHistory. 615 0$aMotion pictures$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aMotion picture industry$xPolitical aspects 676 $a791.430943/109045 686 $aAP 59418$2rvk 702 $aSilberman$b Marc$f1948- 702 $aWrage$b Henning 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910791164403321 996 $aDEFA at the crossroads of East German and international film culture$93809149 997 $aUNINA
