Why have living standards in countries from America to Germany to Japan risen exponentially over the past century? William Baumol rejects the conventional view that capitalism benefits society through price competition--that is, products and services become less costly as firms vie for consumers. Where most others have seen this as the driving force behind growth, he sees something different--a compound of systematic innovation activity within the firm, an arms race in which no firm in an innovating industry dares to fall behind the others in new products and processes, and inter-firm collaboration in the creation and use of innovations. While giving price competition due credit, Baumol stresses that large firms use innovation as a prime competitive weapon. However, as he explains it, firms do not wish to risk too much innovation, because it is costly, and can be made obsolete by rival innovation. So firms have split the difference through the sale of technology licenses and participation in technology-sharing compacts that pay huge dividends to the economy as a whole--and thereby made innovation a routine feature of economic life. This process, in Baumol's view, accounts for the unparalleled growth of modern capitalist economies. Drawing on extensive research and years of consulting work for many large global firms, Baumol shows in this original work that the capitalist growth process, at least in societies where the rule of law prevails, comes far closer to the requirements of economic efficiency than is typically understood. Resounding with rare intellectual force, this book marks a milestone in the comprehension of the accomplishments of our free-market economic system--a new understanding that, suggests the author, promises to benefit many countries that lack the advantages of this immense innovation machine. 606 $aCapitalism 606 $aEconomic development 606 $aTechnological innovations -- Economic aspects 615 4$aCapitalism. 615 4$aEconomic development. 615 4$aTechnological innovations -- Economic aspects. 676 $a330.12 676 $a330.12/2 676 $a330.122 686 $aQC 340$2rvk 700 $aBaumol$b William J., $0268191 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910791048903321 996 $aThe Free-Market Innovation Machine$93847173 997 $aUNINA LEADER 05305nam 2200769 450 001 9910815830803321 005 20230126213607.0 010 $a3-11-039945-8 010 $a3-11-039956-3 024 7 $a10.1515/9783110399455 035 $a(CKB)3710000000496989 035 $a(EBL)4179728 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001580499 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)16258051 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001580499 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)14847404 035 $a(PQKB)11784282 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4179728 035 $a(DE-B1597)432229 035 $a(OCoLC)931035860 035 $a(OCoLC)944083129 035 $a(DE-B1597)9783110399455 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL4179728 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11123848 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL876180 035 $a(OCoLC)932334000 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000496989 100 $a20151222h20152015 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aMacho men and modern women $eMexican immigration, social experts and changing family values in the 20th century United States /$fClaudia Roesch 210 1$aBerlin, [Germany] ;$aBoston, [Massachusetts] :$cDe Gruyter Oldenbourg,$d2015. 210 4$d©2015 215 $a1 online resource (516 p.) 225 0 $aFamily Values and Social Change ;$vVolume 1 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a3-11-039946-6 311 $a3-11-037978-3 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and indexes. 327 $tFront matter --$tAcknowledgements --$tContents --$tIntroduction: Macho Men and Modern Women --$t1. The book focuses both on the negotiation of family norms in social expert studies and on measures taken by social workers and civil-rights activists for families. The work fills gaps in research regarding the history of the American family in the 20th century, the history of Mexican Americans, and the history of social sciences. Taking a long-term perspective from the first wave of Mexican mass immigration in the 1910's and 1920's until the new social movements of the 1970's, the study takes into account influences of the Americanization and eugenics movements, modernization theory, psychoanalysis, and the Chicano civil-rights movement. Thus, Claudia Roesch offers important new findings on the nexus between the scientization of social work and changing family values in the age of modernity. 410 0$aFamily Values and Social Change 606 $aMexican Americans$xSocial conditions 606 $aMexican Americans$xCultural assimilation 606 $aMexican American families 606 $aFamilies$zUnited States 606 $aValues$zUnited States 607 $aMexico$xEmigration and immigration$xSocial aspects 607 $aUnited States$xEmigration and immigration$xSocial aspects 615 0$aMexican Americans$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aMexican Americans$xCultural assimilation. 615 0$aMexican American families. 615 0$aFamilies 615 0$aValues 676 $a973.046872 700 $aRoesch$b Claudia H.$f1958-$01672925 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910815830803321 996 $aMacho men and modern women$94036623 997 $aUNINA
