The Hasmonean high priests exercised both religious and civil powers until 37 B.C.E. and some acted also as kings. Previous studies looked at them mainly from a biblical /Jewish perspective. Vasile Babota persuasively argues that the first high priests Jonathan and Simon acted as Hellenistic high priestly rulers. This conclusion is based on an analysis of the activity of the high priests Jonathan and Simon on internal and external levels, a comparison with earlier Jewish high priests, and a comparison with Hellenistic (Seleucid and Ptolemaic) high priests. 410 0$aSupplements to the Journal for the study of Judaism ;$vv. 165. 606 $aMaccabees 606 $aJewish high priests$xHistory 606 $aJews$xHistory$y168 B.C.-135 A.D 615 0$aMaccabees. 615 0$aJewish high priests$xHistory. 615 0$aJews$xHistory 676 $a229/.7 700 $aBabota$b Vasile$f1974-$01567174 702 $aBabota$b Vasile$f1974- 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910790829403321 996 $aThe institution of the Hasmonean high priesthood$93838374 997 $aUNINA
