Combining political theory with close readings of key texts, this study examines how Milton's polemical and imaginative literature intersects with representations of English Protestant nationhood. Through detailed case studies of Milton's works, Elizabeth Sauer charts the fluctuating narrative of Milton's literary engagements in relation to social, political, and philosophical themes such as ecclesiology, exclusionism, Irish alterity, natural law, disestablishment, geography, and intermarriage. In so doing, Sauer shows the extent to which nationhood and toleration can be subjected to literary and historicist inquiry. Her study makes a salient contribution to Milton studies and to scholarship on early modern literature and the development of the early nation-state. 517 3 $aMilton, Toleration, & Nationhood 606 $aPolitics and literature$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y17th century 606 $aNationalism$zEngland$xHistory$y17th century 606 $aNationalism in literature 606 $aNationalism and literature 607 $aGreat Britain$xPolitics and government$y1603-1714 615 0$aPolitics and literature$xHistory 615 0$aNationalism$xHistory 615 0$aNationalism in literature. 615 0$aNationalism and literature. 676 $a821/.4 686 $aLIT004120$2bisacsh 700 $aSauer$b Elizabeth$f1964-$01463660 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910790809803321 996 $aMilton, toleration, and nationhood$93673042 997 $aUNINA
