An Anglican (Church of Ireland) by conversion, King was a strident critic of John Toland and the clerical superior of Jonathan Swift. Politically King was pivotal to the emergence of the modern concept of the liberal nation state: his defence of the Church of Ireland led him to develop a theory of national rights and privileges that would influence thinkers such as Thomas Paine. King, a staunch conservative, was nonetheless an honest intellectual, a modest and devoted servant of his church and his nation and was at the very heart of the European Enlightenment. 410 0$aEighteenth-century political biographies ;$vno. 7. 606 $aStatesmen$zIreland$vBiography 606 $aChurch and state$zIreland$xHistory$y17th century 606 $aChurch and state$zIreland$xHistory$y18th century 607 $aIreland$xHistory$y1649-1775 615 0$aStatesmen 615 0$aChurch and state$xHistory 615 0$aChurch and state$xHistory 676 $a941.506092 700 $aFauske$b Christopher J.$f1963-$01472970 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910790683603321 996 $aA political biography of William King$93686011 997 $aUNINA
