Créer de nouvelles formes en matière artistique, produire de nouveaux sons et de nouvelles harmonies, imaginer de la fiction littéraire, n?était-ce pas sacrilège et démarche blasphématoire aux yeux de protestants qui se référaient à l?interdit du Décalogue : « Tu ne feras pas de statue... » (Ex, 20-4) ? Les protestants surent contourner cet interdit et développèrent une création artistique et littéraire multiforme tant dans le domaine de la poésie, du théâtre et des lettres que dans celui de la musique. Musique sacrée bien sûr avec Johann Sebastian Bach et la création hymnologique, mais aussi musique des Romantiques allemands du XIXe siècle. L?interdit divin, les artistes protestants le contournèrent également dans le domaine de la création picturale. L?exercice fut ici plus délicat, les protestants ayant montré à maintes reprises leur rejet de ce genre artistique par de violentes manifestations iconoclastes. Eugène Devéria au XIXe siècle et les auteurs de « Vanités » protestantes du XVIIe siècle apportèrent la preuve qu?on pouvait conjuguer Réforme et peinture mais toujours en s?interrogeant sur la légitimité de cette création. Interrogation qu?on retrouve d?ailleurs dès le début du XVIe siècle dans la pensée des premiers grands Réformateurs. A general assumption is that the pedlar travelling from town to countryside was strongly distinct from the role of the established booksellers in the towns, selling books to the educated and affluent buyer. The commercial position of the urban pedlars, however, is very often underestimated.
