For John Milton, Ben Jonson, William Prynne, Thomas Hobbes and others, the period between infancy and adulthood became a site of intense scrutiny, especially as they examined the role of a literary education in turning children into political actors. Drawing on new archival evidence, Blaine Greteman argues that coming of age in the seventeenth century was a uniquely political act. His study makes a compelling case for understanding childhood as a decisive factor in debates over consent, autonomy and political voice, and will offer graduate students and scholars a new perspective on the emergence of apolitical children's literature in the eighteenth century. 517 3 $aThe Poetics & Politics of Youth in Milton's England 606 $aEnglish literature$yEarly modern, 1500-1700$xHistory and criticism 606 $aChildren in literature 606 $aYouth in literature 606 $aChildren and politics$xHistory$y17th century 606 $aLiterature and society$zEngland$xHistory$y17th century 615 0$aEnglish literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aChildren in literature. 615 0$aYouth in literature. 615 0$aChildren and politics$xHistory 615 0$aLiterature and society$xHistory 676 $a820.9/354 700 $aGreteman$b Blaine$01475299 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910790402103321 996 $aThe poetics and politics of youth in Milton's England$93689465 997 $aUNINA
