He quickly rose from trapper to brigade leader to partner, all within a half dozen years. In the mid-1830s, Campbell retired from the mountains, having already amassed considerable wealth, and embarked on a new career. He returned to St. Louis and built up a business empire that embraced mercantile, steamboat, railroad, and banking interests. Through these ventures he not only gained more wealth but also became a leading force behind the development of the region's economy. Exploring the enormous treasure trove of letters, journals, and account books that Campbell left behind, William Nester places Campbell in the context of the times in which he lived, showing the economic, political, social, and cultural forces that provided the opportunities and challenges that shaped his life. 410 0$aMissouri biography series. 606 $aPioneers$zWest (U.S.)$vBiography 606 $aFur traders$zWest (U.S.)$vBiography 606 $aBusinessmen$zMissouri$zSaint Louis$vBiography 606 $aFur trade$zRocky Mountains$xHistory$y19th century 607 $aSaint Louis (Mo.)$vBiography 607 $aMissouri$xHistory$yCivil War, 1861-1865 615 0$aPioneers 615 0$aFur traders 615 0$aBusinessmen 615 0$aFur trade$xHistory 676 $a978/.02/092 700 $aNester$b William R$0122960 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910790193103321 996 $aFrom mountain man to millionaire$93763970 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04711nam 22006855 450 001 9910484275403321 005 20240318094928.0 010 $a9789401793193 010 $a9401793190 024 7 $a10.1007/978-94-017-9319-3 035 $a(CKB)3710000000262455 035 $a(EBL)1968038 035 $a(OCoLC)894040974 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001372736 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11978693 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001372736 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11304641 035 $a(PQKB)10687372 035 $a(DE-He213)978-94-017-9319-3 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1968038 035 $a(PPN)182099210 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000262455 100 $a20141020d2015 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aPhilosophy of Music Education Challenged: Heideggerian Inspirations $eMusic, Education and Personal Development /$fedited by Frederik Pio, Øivind Varkøy 205 $a1st ed. 2015. 210 1$aDordrecht :$cSpringer Netherlands :$cImprint: Springer,$d2015. 215 $a1 online resource (261 p.) 225 1 $aLandscapes: the Arts, Aesthetics, and Education,$x2214-0069 ;$v15 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 08$a9789401793186 311 08$a9401793182 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references. 327 $aIntroduction: An Ontological Turn in the Field of Music and Music Education -- Part I Technical Rationality and Nihilism -- 1. Music as an educational subject is under intense pressure, both economically, due to the reduction of education budgets, as well as due to a loss of status with policy makers. The contributions in this book illuminate Martin Heidegger?s thinking as a highly cogent theoretical framework for understanding the nature and depth of this crisis. The contributors explore from various angles the relationship between the pressure on music education and the foundations of our technical and rationalized modern society, and lead the way on the indispensable first steps towards reconnecting the cultural practices of education with music and its valuable contributions to personal development. 410 0$aLandscapes: the Arts, Aesthetics, and Education,$x2214-0069 ;$v15 606 $aArt$xStudy and teaching 606 $aEducation$xPhilosophy 606 $aCreativity and Arts Education 606 $aPhilosophy of Education 606 $aEducational Philosophy 615 0$aArt$xStudy and teaching. 615 0$aEducation$xPhilosophy. 615 14$aCreativity and Arts Education. 615 24$aPhilosophy of Education. 615 24$aEducational Philosophy. 676 $a107 676 $a370 676 $a370.1 676 $a700.71 702 $aPio$b Frederik$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aVarkøy$b Øivind$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910484275403321 996 $aPhilosophy of Music Education Challenged: Heideggerian Inspirations$92847949 997 $aUNINA
