Eastwood grapples with this involvement of masculinity in and through many of the great symbols of American life, including cowboys, boxing, police dramas, and ultimately war ... Cornell's book is not a traditional book of film criticism or a cinematographic biography. Rather, it is a work of social commentary and ethical philosophy. In a world in which we seem to be losing our grip on shared symbols, along with community itself, Eastwood's films work with the fragmented symbols that remain to us in order to engage masculinity with the most profound moral and ethical issues facing us today."--Publisher's description. 606 $aMasculinity in motion pictures 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aMasculinity in motion pictures. 676 $a791.4302/33092 700 $aCornell$b Drucilla$0162088 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910457044703321 996 $aClint Eastwood and issues of American masculinity$92477561 997 $aUNINA 999 $aThis Record contains information from the Harvard Library Bibliographic Dataset, which is provided by the Harvard Library under its Bibliographic Dataset Use Terms and includes data made available by, among others the Library of Congress LEADER 04659nam 2201033 a 450 001 9910790186603321 005 20230617025731.0 010 $a0-520-93007-X 024 7 $a10.1525/9780520930070 035 $a(CKB)2670000000162531 035 $a(EBL)1982557 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000667639 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11402460 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000667639 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10683290 035 $a(PQKB)10865795 035 $a(StDuBDS)EDZ0000056120 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1982557 035 $a(DE-B1597)520060 035 $a(OCoLC)1110714363 035 $a(DE-B1597)9780520930070 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1982557 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10676289 035 $a(OCoLC)889260642 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000162531 100 $a20040423d2004 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 12$aA Gothic sermon$b[electronic resource] $emaking a contract with the Mother of God, Saint Mary of Amiens /$fStephen Murray 210 $aBerkeley, Calif. $cUniversity of California Press$dc2004 215 $a1 online resource (191 p.) 225 1 $aAhmanson Murphy fine arts imprint 300 $a"Sermon in honor of the Mother of God, Saint Mary of Amiens": P. 311 $a0-520-23847-8 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (p. 147-161). 327 $tFrontmatter -- $tCONTENTS -- $tPLATES -- $tACKNOWLEDGMENTS -- $tIntroduction -- $t1. In addition to providing a complete transcription and translation of the text, Murray examines the historical context of the sermon and draws comparisons between its underlying structure and the Gothic portals of the cathedral. In the sermon, as in the cathedral, he finds a powerful motivational mechanism that invites the repentant sinner to enter into a new contract with the Virgin Mary. The correlation between elements of the sermon's text and the sculptural components of the cathedral leads to an exploration of the socioeconomic conditions in Picardy at the time and a vivid sketch of how the cathedral and its images were used by ordinary people. The author finds parallels in the rhetorical tools used in the sermon, on the one hand, and stylistic and compositional tools used in the sculpture, on the other. In addition to providing a fascinating and cogent consideration of medieval beliefs about salvation and redemption, this book also lays the groundwork for a long overdue examination of the performative and textual in relationship to sculpture. 410 0$aAhmanson Murphy fine arts imprint. 606 $aSermons, French 610 $a13th century. 610 $aamiens. 610 $acathedral. 610 $acatholic church. 610 $acovenant. 610 $adoctrine. 610 $aeurope. 610 $afrench catholicism. 610 $agothic architecture. 610 $ahistory. 610 $amedieval beliefs. 610 $amedieval religion. 610 $amedieval sermon. 610 $amedieval. 610 $amother of god. 610 $anonfiction. 610 $anotre dame. 610 $aoration. 610 $aoratory. 610 $apicardy. 610 $apreach. 610 $apreacher. 610 $apriest. 610 $aredemption. 610 $areligion. 610 $areligious experience. 610 $arepentance. 610 $asaint mary. 610 $asaints. 610 $asalvation. 610 $ascripture. 610 $asculpture. 610 $asermon. 610 $asinner. 610 $aspirituality. 610 $avirgin mary. 610 $avisual culture. 615 0$aSermons, French. 676 $a252/.02 700 $aMurray$b Stephen$f1945-$01462601 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910790186603321 996 $aA Gothic sermon$93671633 997 $aUNINA
