Based on a sample from an extensive library and on additional information the numbers of manuscripts surviving from the period 500 ? 1500 have been assessed statistically. Other data have been used to quantify the loss rates of such books in the Latin West. Combining both sets of data allowed the estimation of the medieval production rates of manuscripts. Book production during the Middle Ages can be seen as a century-average indicator of local economic output. With a number of explanatory variables (monasteries, universities) the medieval book production in the Latin West can be adequately explained. 410 0$aGlobal Economic History Series$v6. 606 $aBook industries and trade$zEurope, Western$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aBooks$zEurope, Western$xHistory$y400-1450 606 $aCodicology$xStatistical methods 606 $aManuscripts$xReproduction$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aManuscripts, Medieval$zEurope, Western$xHistory 615 0$aBook industries and trade$xHistory 615 0$aBooks$xHistory 615 0$aCodicology$xStatistical methods. 615 0$aManuscripts$xReproduction$xHistory 615 0$aManuscripts, Medieval$xHistory. 676 $a091.094 700 $aBuringh$b E$01465683 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910790138103321 996 $aMedieval manuscript production in the Latin West$93675834 997 $aUNINA
