The challenges it poses to traditional academic values have been recognized from the start, but they have grown more ominous in recent decades, as cable television has become ubiquitous, commercial opportunities have proliferated and athletic budgets have ballooned. Drawing on new research findings, this book takes a fresh look at the role of commercial sports in American universities. It shows that, rather than being the inconsequential student activity that universities often imply that it is, big-time sport has become a core function of the universities that engage in it. For this reason, the book takes this function seriously and presents evidence necessary for a constructive perspective about its value. Although big-time sport surely creates worrying conflicts in values, it also brings with it some surprising positive consequences. 606 $aCollege sports$zUnited States 615 0$aCollege sports 676 $a796.04/30973 686 $aBUS069000$2bisacsh 700 $aClotfelter$b Charles T.$0140636 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910790055003321 996 $aBig-time sports in American universities$93780784 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02379nam 2200565 450 001 9910810638403321 005 20200320105710.0 010 $a1-282-01732-2 010 $a9786612017322 010 $a84-9897-068-7 035 $a(CKB)2420000000006274 035 $a(EBL)1930805 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000419623 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12131001 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000419623 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10382791 035 $a(PQKB)10144451 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4719029 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC6772109 035 $a(OCoLC)1149094566 035 $a(FINmELB)ELB124041 035 $a(PPN)228056195 035 $a(EXLCZ)992420000000006274 100 $a20161213h20162016 uy 0 101 0 $aspa 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aHistoria de la guerra de Granada /$fDiego Hurtado de Mendoza 210 1$aBarcelona, [Spain] :$cwww.linkgua-digital.com,$d2016. 210 4$dİ2016 215 $a1 online resource (155 p.) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record.
