Utilizing real estate, financial, and death records, as well as oral accounts of the labor migrants along with colonial officials and mining companies' information stored in National Archives in Guyana, Great Britain, and the U.S. Library of Congress, the study situates miners into the historical structure of the country's economic development. It analyzes the workers attraction to mining from agriculture, their concepts of "order and progress," and how they shaped their lives in positive ways rather than becoming mere victims of colonialism. In this contentious plantation society plagued by adversarial relations between the economic elites and the laboring class, in addition to producing the strategically important bauxite for the aviation era of World Wars I & II, for almost a century the workers braved the ecologically hostile and sometimes deadly environments of the gold and diamond fields in the quest for El Dorado in Guyana. 606 $aAfrica$xHistory 606 $aGreat Britain$xHistory 606 $aInternational economic relations 606 $aAmerica$xHistory 606 $aSocial history 606 $aHistory, Modern 606 $aAfrican History 606 $aHistory of Britain and Ireland 606 $aInternational Political Economy? 606 $aHistory of the Americas 606 $aSocial History 606 $aModern History 615 0$aAfrica$xHistory. 615 0$aGreat Britain$xHistory. 615 0$aInternational economic relations. 615 0$aAmerica$xHistory. 615 0$aSocial history. 615 0$aHistory, Modern. 615 14$aAfrican History. 615 24$aHistory of Britain and Ireland. 615 24$aInternational Political Economy?. 615 24$aHistory of the Americas. 615 24$aSocial History. 615 24$aModern History. 676 $a331.626609881 686 $aHIS033000$aHIS037060$aHIS037070$aHIS001000$aPOL023000$aHIS054000$2bisacsh 700 $aJosiah$b B$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01584717 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910789892803321 996 $aMigration, Mining, and the African Diaspora$93868670 997 $aUNINA
