D?un côté, la possible conjonction entre les arts, au risque de l?illustration ; de l?autre, le timbre comme un élément constructif, au même titre que les structures thématiques ou harmoniques. On comprend dès lors que Wagner occupe une place importante dans la réflexion adornienne, ayant revendiqué la réunion des arts dans le Gesamkunstwerk tout en développant le rôle des couleurs instrumentales dans son écriture orchestrale. Chez Richard Strauss, antithèse de Schönberg, les aspects progressistes et régressifs d?un tel héritage sont inextricablement mêlés. Dans les textes ici réunis, Adorno réfléchit à cette émancipation du timbre qui fut au c?ur de la pensée sérielle de l?après-guerre, et que Ligeti, dans Atmosphères, poussa à son extrême ; il insiste sur la nécessité de questionner ce qui en elle n?est qu?apparence au profit d?une fonctionnalité nouvelle. C?est notamment le propos des cours prononcés à Darmstadt en 1966 et qui ont donné leur titre à ce recueil. Si certains des textes de ce volume ont fait l?objet d?une traduction aujourd?hui introuvable, la plupart sont inédits en français.
