This shift in German memory culture from a focus on responsibility for the Holocaust to a focus on wartime suffering has attracted a lot of critical attention over the past decade, in both Cultural and Literary Studies and History. This volume brings together British, German, Dutch and American scholars from the fields of Cultural Studies, History and Sociology to address the national and international significance of discourses of ?German wartime suffering? in post-war and contemporary Germany. The focus of this interdisciplinary volume is both on the historical roots of the ?Germans as victims? narratives and the forms of their continuing existence in contemporary public memory and culture. The first three sections of this volume explore the conditions of German victim discourses in a variety of media and public arenas from historiography, sociology, literature and film to monuments, civil defence bunkers and local public memory. The final section sets the contemporary re-articulation of German wartime suffering in an international context with respect to its reception and its reflection in both Western and Eastern Europe and Israel. 410 0$aGerman monitor ;$vno. 73. 606 $aWorld War, 1939-1945$zGermany 606 $aCollective memory$zGermany 606 $aHolocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) 606 $aHistory$xPsychological aspects 606 $aNational characteristics, German 615 0$aWorld War, 1939-1945 615 0$aCollective memory 615 0$aHolocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) 615 0$aHistory$xPsychological aspects. 615 0$aNational characteristics, German. 676 $a943.087072 701 $aSchmitz$b Helmut$01561268 701 $aSeidel-Arpac?$b Annette$01563379 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910789555203321 996 $aNarratives of trauma$93831751 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01942nas 2200421 n 450 001 990008936450403321 005 20240229084549.0 011 $a0361-5960 035 $a000893645 035 $aFED01000893645 035 $a(Aleph)000893645FED01 035 $a000893645 091 $2CNR$aP 00020632 100 $a20090724b19761987km-y0itaa50------ba 101 0 $aeng 102 $aUS 110 $aauu-------- 200 1 $aCancer treatment reports 207 1$a1976-1987 210 $aWashington$cU.S. Dept. of Health, Education, and Welfare, Public Health Service, National Institutes of Health; For sale by the Supt. of Docs., U.S. G.P.O. 436 0$12001$aCancer chemotherapy reports.
