Her extraordinary story, sometimes humourous and sometimes heartbreaking, illustrates an Inuit woman?s movement between worlds and ways of understanding. It also provides a clear-eyed record of the changes that swept through Inuit communities in the 1940s and 1950s. Mini Aodla Freeman was born in 1936 on Cape Hope Island in James Bay. At the age of sixteen, she began nurse's training at Ste. Therese School in Fort George, Quebec, and in 1957 she moved to Ottawa to work as a translator for the then Department of Northern Affairs and Natural Resources. Her memoir, Life Among the Qallunaat, was published in 1978 and has been translated into French, German, and Greenlandic. Life Among the Qallunaat is the third book in the First Voices, First Texts series, which publishes lost or under appreciated texts by Indigenous writers. This reissue of Mini Aodla Freeman?s path-breaking work includes new material, an interview with the author, and an afterword by Keavy Martin and Julie Rak, with Norma Dunning. 410 0$aFirst voices, first texts ;$v3. 606 $aInuit$zCanada$vBiography 607 $aCanada$2fast 607 $aKanada$2gnd 610 $aDepartment of Indian and Northern Affairs. 610 $aInuit. 610 $aJames Bay. 610 $aOttawa. 610 $aautobiography. 610 $atuberculosis. 615 0$aInuit 676 $a971.004/971 700 $aFreeman$b Minnie Aodla$01477622 702 $aMartin$b Keavy 702 $aRack$b Julie 702 $aDunning$b Norma 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910797176903321 996 $aLife among the Qallunaat$93692874 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04687nam 22011531 450 001 9910789340603321 005 20230831221128.0 010 $a0-520-93125-4 024 7 $a10.1525/9780520931251 035 $a(CKB)3400000000085036 035 $a(EBL)1513946 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000682048 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11406742 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000682048 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10663583 035 $a(PQKB)11569322 035 $a(DE-B1597)518637 035 $a(OCoLC)1110719588 035 $a(DE-B1597)9780520931251 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1513946 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10793606 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL538610 035 $a(OCoLC)862375533 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1513946 035 $a(PPN)183546148 035 $a(EXLCZ)993400000000085036 100 $a19851111h20052005 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aWhat is cinema?$hVolume 1 /$fby Andre? (volumes I and II) have been classics of film studies for as long as they've been available and are considered the gold standard in the field of film criticism. Although Bazin made no films, his name has been one of the most important in French cinema since World War II. He was co-founder of the influential Cahiers du Cinéma, which under his leadership became one of the world's most distinguished publications. Championing the films of Jean Renoir (who contributed a short foreword to Volume I), Orson Welles, and Roberto Rossellini, he became the protégé of François Truffaut, who honors him touchingly in his foreword to Volume II. This new edition includes graceful forewords to each volume by Bazin scholar and biographer Dudley Andrew, who reconsiders Bazin and his place in contemporary film study. The essays themselves are erudite but always accessible, intellectual, and stimulating. As Renoir puts it, the essays of Bazin "will survive even if the cinema does not." 606 $aMotion pictures 606 $aPerforming arts 610 $aaesthetics. 610 $aandre bazin. 610 $aart criticism. 610 $acahiers du cinema. 610 $acharlie chaplin. 610 $acinema. 610 $acinematography. 610 $acultural studies. 610 $adigital film. 610 $adrama. 610 $afilm and art. 610 $afilm and media. 610 $afilm criticism. 610 $afilm history. 610 $afilm movements. 610 $afilm studies. 610 $afilm theory. 610 $afilm. 610 $afilmmaking. 610 $aflim. 610 $afrench cinema. 610 $aimage culture. 610 $ajean renoir. 610 $amedia. 610 $amixed cinema. 610 $amontage. 610 $amovies. 610 $anarrative. 610 $aneorealism. 610 $anonfiction. 610 $aorson welles. 610 $aperforming arts. 610 $aphotography. 610 $aroberto rossellini. 610 $asartre. 610 $asound cinema. 610 $atechnology. 610 $atheater. 610 $atotal cinema. 610 $atruffaut. 610 $avisual culture. 615 0$aMotion pictures. 615 0$aPerforming arts. 676 $a791.43 700 $aBazin$b Andre?$f1918-1958.$0382106 701 $aAndrew$b Dudley$f1945-$0532928 701 $aGray$b Hugh$f1900-1981.$01012984 701 $aRenoir$b Jean$f1894-1979.$0215422 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910789340603321 996 $aWhat is cinema$92371966 997 $aUNINA
