Written in 1821 by Chong Yagyong (Tasan), Admonitions on Governing the People (Mongmin simso) is a detailed manual for district magistrates on how to govern better. In encyclopedic fashion, Chong Yagyong addresses the administration, social and economic life, criminal justice, the military, and the Confucian ritual system. He provides examples of past corrupt officials and discusses topics of the day such as famine relief and social welfare. A general call for overhauling the Korean ruling system, the book also makes the radical proposition that the purpose of government is to serve the interests of the people. This long-awaited translation opens a new window on early-nineteenth century Korea and makes available to a wide audience a work whose main concerns simultaneously transcend national and cultural boundaries. 606 $aCivil service ethics$zKorea 606 $aLocal officials and employees$zKorea$xConduct of life 610 $a1821. 610 $aadministrations. 610 $aasian lit. 610 $aconfucianism. 610 $acriminal justice. 610 $acultural boundaries. 610 $adistrict magistrates. 610 $aearly 19th century. 610 $aeconomics. 610 $aencyclopedia reference. 610 $aenglish translation. 610 $afamine relief. 610 $afamous literature. 610 $aglobal literature. 610 $agovernance. 610 $agovernment and governing. 610 $agovernment. 610 $ahistorical. 610 $akorea. 610 $akorean literature. 610 $akorean military. 610 $akorean ruling system. 610 $anonfiction. 610 $apeoples government. 610 $apolitical. 610 $apremodern literature. 610 $aritual system. 610 $asocial history. 610 $asocial welfare. 615 0$aCivil service ethics 615 0$aLocal officials and employees$xConduct of life. 676 $a351 700 $aChong$b Yag-yong$f1762-1836.$01535281 701 $aChoi$b Byonghyon$f1950-$01535282 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788998803321 996 $aAdmonitions on governing the people$93783404 997 $aUNINA
