Im ersten Teil stehen Techniken im Mittelpunkt, welche die Makrostruktur und Mikrostruktur des Textkorpus prägen. Hierbei weist die Arbeit nach, dass sich die drei Autoren sowohl auf spannungsreiche Art mit dem "klassischen" Gattungsmodell des Reiseberichts auseinandersetzen als auch mit der Einfügung von Zitaten (Forster), der Annäherung an die Kunst (Humboldt) und dem Rückgriff auf die Lyrik (Chamisso) darüber hinausgehen. Im zweiten Teil wechselt der Fokus von der Fremddarstellung der Expeditionsziele zur Selbstdarstellung der Reisenden. Hier beleuchtet die Studie zunächst drei Posen der literarischen Selbstinszenierung: bei Forster dessen Einreihung in die Mode der Empfindsamkeit, bei Humboldt dessen Agieren als Causeur sowie bei Chamisso dessen Identifikation mit der fiktionalen Figur Peter Schlemihl. Im Anschluss daran analysiert die Arbeit Selbstverortungen der drei Autoren auf dem literarischen Feld.
