Yet, this impressive performance has been associated with an increasing regional income disparity. We use a recently developed nonparametric approach to analyze the variation in labor productivity growth across China's provinces. This approach imposes less structure on the data than the standard growth accounting framework and allows for a breakdown of labor productivity into capital deepening, efficiency gains, and technological progress. Like other studies before us, we do not find strong evidence of convergence in labor productivity across China's provinces during 1978-98. However, our results show that provinces converged in efficiency levels, while they diverged in capital deepening and technological progress. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/055 606 $aEconomic development$zChina 606 $aProduction and Operations Management$2imf 606 $aInventions$2imf 606 $aEmployment$2imf 606 $aUnemployment$2imf 606 $aWages$2imf 606 $aIntergenerational Income Distribution$2imf 606 $aAggregate Human Capital$2imf 606 $aAggregate Labor Productivity$2imf 606 $aHuman Capital$2imf 606 $aSkills$2imf 606 $aOccupational Choice$2imf 606 $aLabor Productivity$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics: Production$2imf 606 $aInnovation$2imf 606 $aResearch and Development$2imf 606 $aTechnological Change$2imf 606 $aIntellectual Property Rights: General$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aInventions & inventors$2imf 606 $aTechnology$2imf 606 $ageneral issues$2imf 606 $aCapital productivity$2imf 606 $aLabor productivity$2imf 606 $aProductivity$2imf 606 $aTechnological innovation$2imf 606 $aIndustrial productivity$2imf 606 $aTechnological innovations$2imf 607 $aChina$xEconomic conditions 607 $aChina, People's Republic of$2imf 615 0$aEconomic development 615 7$aProduction and Operations Management 615 7$aInventions 615 7$aEmployment 615 7$aUnemployment 615 7$aWages 615 7$aIntergenerational Income Distribution 615 7$aAggregate Human Capital 615 7$aAggregate Labor Productivity 615 7$aHuman Capital 615 7$aSkills 615 7$aOccupational Choice 615 7$aLabor Productivity 615 7$aMacroeconomics: Production 615 7$aInnovation 615 7$aResearch and Development 615 7$aTechnological Change 615 7$aIntellectual Property Rights: General 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aInventions & inventors 615 7$aTechnology 615 7$ageneral issues 615 7$aCapital productivity 615 7$aLabor productivity 615 7$aProductivity 615 7$aTechnological innovation 615 7$aIndustrial productivity 615 7$aTechnological innovations 700 $aUnel$b Bulent$01558685 701 $aZebregs$b Harm$01558686 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788694603321 996 $aThe Dynamics of Provincial Growth in China$93823274 997 $aUNINA
