As Michael Klarman shows in this book, it is because its proponents have adopted a court-centred approach for advancing their cause.$bSame-sex marriage has become one of the most volatile issues in American politics. But if most young people support gay marriage, and if there are clear indicators that a substantial majority of the population will soon favor it, why has the outcry against it been so strong?Bancroft Prize-winning historian and legal expert Michael Klarman here offers an illuminating and engaging account of modern litigation over same-sex marriage. After looking at the treatment of gays in the decades after World War II and the birth of the modern gay rights movement with the Stonewall Rebellion in 1969, Klarman describes the key legal cases involving gay marriage and the dramatic political backlashes they ignited. He examines the Hawaii Supreme Court's ruling in 1993, whichsparked a vast political backlash-with more than 35 states and Congress enacting defense-of-marriage acts-and the Massachusetts decision in Goodridge in 2003, which inspired more than 25 states to adopt constitutional bans on same-sex marriage. Klarman traces this same pattern-court victory followed bydramatic backlash-through cases in Vermont, California, and Iowa, taking the story right up to the present. He also describes some of the collateral political damage caused by court decisions in favor of gay marriage-Iowa judges losing their jobs, Senator Majority Leader Tom Daschle losing his seat, and the possibly dispositive impact of gay marriage on the 2004 presidential election. But Klarman also notes several ways in which litigation has accelerated the coming of same-sex marriage:forcing people to discuss the issue, raising the hopes and expectations of gay activists, and making other reforms like civil unions seem more moderate by comparison. In the end, Klarman discusses how gay marriage is likely to evolve in the future, predicts how the U.S. Supreme Court might ultimatelyresolve the issue, and assesses the costs and benefits of activists' pursuing social reforms such as gay marriage through the courts. From the Closet to the Altar will stand as the definitive one-volume history of the tumultuous emergence of same-sex marriage in American life as well as a landmark study of litigation, social reform, and the phenomenon of political backlash to court decisions. 606 $aSame-sex marriage$xLaw and legislation$zUnited States$xHistory 606 $aGay couples$xLegal status, laws, etc$zUnited States$xHistory 606 $aSame-sex marriage$xLaw and legislation$zUnited States$xStates 606 $aCivil unions$xLaw and legislation$zUnited States 615 0$aSame-sex marriage$xLaw and legislation$xHistory. 615 0$aGay couples$xLegal status, laws, etc.$xHistory. 615 0$aSame-sex marriage$xLaw and legislation$xStates. 615 0$aCivil unions$xLaw and legislation 676 $a346.730168 686 $aLAW013000$aPOL029000$2bisacsh 700 $aKlarman$b Michael J.$0751668 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788590003321 996 $aFrom the closet to the altar$93776973 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01872oam 2200457 450 001 9910779361603321 005 20170523091557.0 010 $a1-78034-023-0 010 $a1-4129-7461-5 010 $a1-4522-6623-9 035 $a(OCoLC)732280048 035 $a(MiFhGG)GVRL4NVX 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000000112399 100 $a20110225d2011 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurun|---uuuua 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$aGreen education $ean A-to-Z guide /$fJulie Newman, editor 210 $aThousand Oaks, Calif. ;$aLondon $cSAGE$dc2011 210 1$aThousand Oaks, Calif. :$cSAGE Publications,$d2011. 215 $a1 online resource (xxviii, 515 pages) $cillustrations 225 1 $aThe SAGE reference series on green society 300 $aDescription based on print version record. 311 $a1-322-42183-8 311 $a1-4129-9686-4 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aCover ; Contents; About the Editors; Introduction; Reader's Guide; List of Articles; List of Contributors; Green Education Chronology; A; B; C; D; E; G; H; I; K; L; M; N; O; P; R; S; T; U; V; W; Y; Green Education Glossary; Index 330 8 $aThis volume explores the environmental movement's proliferation in the field of education, from elementary school classroom efforts to the university curriculum to building sustainable campuses. 410 4$aThe SAGE Reference Series on Green Society: Toward a Sustainable Future-Series Editor: Paul Robbins 606 $aSustainable development$xStudy and teaching 615 0$aSustainable development$xStudy and teaching. 676 $a338.927071 702 $aNewman$b Julie 801 0$bMiFhGG 801 1$bMiFhGG 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910779361603321 996 $aGreen education$93871065 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02862nam 2200661Ia 450 001 9910819327603321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a1-4462-4494-6 010 $a1-4462-5179-9 010 $a1-283-28938-5 010 $a9786613289384 010 $a1-4462-1099-5 035 $a(CKB)2550000000057199 035 $a(EBL)743506 035 $a(OCoLC)764572610 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000644350 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12255848 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000644350 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10675866 035 $a(PQKB)10944735 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC743506 035 $a(OCoLC)757390378 035 $a(StDuBDS)EDZ0000082898 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL743506 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10504478 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL328938 035 $a(FINmELB)ELB133939 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000000057199 100 $a20091125d2010 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$aSecondary science 11 to 16 $ea practical guide /$fGren Ireson, ...
