The paper presents several conventional techniques for assessing competitiveness, namely the real exchange rate and recent trade performance. Several other measures are considered, in particular transport costs and governance measures, which may be more effective in capturing the obstacles to competitiveness posed by the poor security environment and weak institutions common to many post-conflict situations. The real exchange measure and trade measures suggest some mild erosion of competitiveness in recent years, while the other measures indicate that the competitiveness challenges faced by the Central African Republic are much deeper. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/303 606 $aCompetition$zCentral African Republic 606 $aForeign exchange rates$zCentral African Republic 606 $aPostwar reconstruction$zCentral African Republic 606 $aFinance: General$2imf 606 $aForeign Exchange$2imf 606 $aInfrastructure$2imf 606 $aIndustry Studies: Transportation and Utilities: General$2imf 606 $aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)$2imf 606 $aInvestment$2imf 606 $aCapital$2imf 606 $aIntangible Capital$2imf 606 $aCapacity$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aCurrency$2imf 606 $aForeign exchange$2imf 606 $aFinance$2imf 606 $aTransportation$2imf 606 $aCompetition$2imf 606 $aReal exchange rates$2imf 606 $aExchange rates$2imf 606 $aSaving and investment$2imf 607 $aCentral African Republic$xCommerce 607 $aCentral African Republic$xEconomic conditions 607 $aCentral African Republic$xEconomic policy 607 $aBurkina Faso$2imf 615 0$aCompetition 615 0$aForeign exchange rates 615 0$aPostwar reconstruction 615 7$aFinance: General 615 7$aForeign Exchange 615 7$aInfrastructure 615 7$aIndustry Studies: Transportation and Utilities: General 615 7$aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data) 615 7$aInvestment 615 7$aCapital 615 7$aIntangible Capital 615 7$aCapacity 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aCurrency 615 7$aForeign exchange 615 7$aFinance 615 7$aTransportation 615 7$aCompetition 615 7$aReal exchange rates 615 7$aExchange rates 615 7$aSaving and investment 700 $aLewis$b Mark$0792112 701 $aNachega$b Jean-Claude$01462119 701 $aBakhache$b Said$01462120 701 $aKalonji$b Kadima$01462121 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund.$bAfrican Dept. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788524203321 996 $aAssessing Competitiveness After Conflict$93670963 997 $aUNINA
