Ryder. 330 $aThe second half of the fourteenth century was a period of rapid change in the Eastern Mediterranean, principally due to the expansion into Europe of the Ottoman Turks. Demetrius Kydones was one of the key Byzantine political and intellectual figures of the time, and his writings are regarded as one of the most important sources for study of the period. Kydones? career spanned at least four decades, from the 1340's to the 1380's. A Latin scholar, influenced in particular by the writings of Thomas Aquinas (some of which he translated into Greek), Kydones was a leading advocate of improvement of relations between Byzantium and the Latin West as crucial to Byzantine survival. This book examines Kydones? career and writings, investigating how they can contribute to developing a nuanced understanding of Byzantine political and cultural developments in these years of crisis. 410 0$aMedieval Mediterranean ;$vv. 85. 606 $aStatesmen$zByzantine Empire$vBiography 606 $aAuthors, Byzantine$vBiography 607 $aByzantine Empire$xIntellectual life 607 $aByzantine Empire$xPolitics and government$y1081-1453 607 $aByzantine Empire$xChurch history 607 $aByzantine Empire$xSocial conditions 615 0$aStatesmen 615 0$aAuthors, Byzantine 676 $a949.504092 700 $aRyder$b Judith R.$f1976-$0173326 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788482803321 996 $aThe career and writings of Demetrius Kydones$93800732 997 $aUNINA
