These deposits have provided much needed foreign exchange to the country, adding support to the exchange rate peg. This paper studies the long-run determinants of emigrant deposits with respect to risk, wealth, and return variables, isolating speculative and altruistic motives underlying the accumulation of flows. The study suggests that the temporary character of recent emigration is responsible for the rise in the share of flows driven by altruism. Finally, the paper discusses policy implications in light of the empirical findings and the recent literature on this topic. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/132 606 $aEmigrant remittances$zCabo Verde 606 $aEmigration and immigration$xEconomic aspects$zCabo Verde 606 $aBanks and Banking$2imf 606 $aExports and Imports$2imf 606 $aForeign Exchange$2imf 606 $aEmigration and Immigration$2imf 606 $aInternational Migration$2imf 606 $aInterest Rates: Determination, Term Structure, and Effects$2imf 606 $aRemittances$2imf 606 $aMigration, immigration & emigration$2imf 606 $aFinance$2imf 606 $aInternational economics$2imf 606 $aCurrency$2imf 606 $aForeign exchange$2imf 606 $aMigration$2imf 606 $aReal interest rates$2imf 606 $aDeposit rates$2imf 606 $aEmigration and immigration$2imf 606 $aInterest rates$2imf 606 $aInternational finance$2imf 607 $aCabo Verde$2imf 615 0$aEmigrant remittances 615 0$aEmigration and immigration$xEconomic aspects 615 7$aBanks and Banking 615 7$aExports and Imports 615 7$aForeign Exchange 615 7$aEmigration and Immigration 615 7$aInternational Migration 615 7$aInterest Rates: Determination, Term Structure, and Effects 615 7$aRemittances 615 7$aMigration, immigration & emigration 615 7$aFinance 615 7$aInternational economics 615 7$aCurrency 615 7$aForeign exchange 615 7$aMigration 615 7$aReal interest rates 615 7$aDeposit rates 615 7$aEmigration and immigration 615 7$aInterest rates 615 7$aInternational finance 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund.$bAfrican Dept. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788411503321 996 $aDeterminants of Emigrant Deposits in Cape Verde$93802251 997 $aUNINA
